DAR Dogs Needing Homes

Please browse through all of our available dogs. We do the best to match the known temperament, breed, age, and level of activity of our dogs to potential owners. Some dogs require more training than others; some would suit being rehomed as the only dog or would prefer canine companionship. If you have any additional queries on the dogs below, please contact us at info@dar.ie .

PLEASE NOTE: We do not have a facility for holding all of our dogs. They are kept in private boarding kennels, foster homes or still with their owners who are seeking to surrender them. ALL VIEWINGS are by APPOINTMENT ONLY.

All of our dogs are vaccinated, neutered (if older than 6 months), de-wormed & de-flea'd. All dogs receive a health check from local vets. Drogheda Animal Rescue will do its best to assess the character, temperament, and level of obedience of each dog before it is rehomed.

Drogheda Animal Rescue requests a donation when adopting a dog. All donations are used solely for the care of our animals and will help with the expense incurred by Drogheda Animal Rescue for veterinarian costs associated with vaccinations, neutering, worming & de-flea'ing.

The DONATION GUIDELINE below is the minimum amount that will cover our vaccination & neutering costs only. Please bear in mind that many of our dogs are kept in costly boarding kennels until homes can be found, and Drogheda Animal Rescue absorbs this cost.

  • Un-Vaccinated Puppies: €25.00
  • Vaccinated Dogs & Puppies: €65.00
  • Vaccinated & Neutered Dogs: €150
  • Microchipping: Free of Charge for all DAR Dogs

All potential owners must complete a rehoming questionnaire and all homes are vetted. Please see section on Adoption Process - Dogs for further details on our adoption policy.

Roman

More Photos
AGE: 2-3 years old
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Husky
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Roman was found wandering in Julianstown, Co. Meath and came into DAR's care. His owner was found but she surrendered him to DAR as she had neither the time nor space to give him what he needed. He is a male Husky, 2-3 yrs old and like all Huskies, Roman needs a very active lifestyle and ideally company during the day.

He is a smaller sized Husky compared to some and has a very good temperament. He is good with adults, children and other dogs. He has no experience of cats, so we cannot say what his reaction might be so caution would be advised.

Roman has now been fully vaccinated, neutered and microchip and is currently in kennels awaiting a new home.

If you have an active lifestyle that can include Roman, a secure garden, and the time and attention to give a young, active dog, please let us know. Roman is a great dog and deserves a great home. Please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank you!

Missy the GSD

More Photos
AGE: 2 Years of Age
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: German Shepherd Cross Breed
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Missy was surrendered by her owner due to a change in accommodation. She's about 2-years of age and is a German Shepherd cross breed. She's not as big as a Shepherd and is under 30-kg in weight.

There's only good things to say about Missy so where shall we begin: Missy is great with other dogs and is good with people and children. She doesn't seem to be bothered with cats. She's quiet and well mannered, great traveler in the car and isn't a fussy eater! She's gentle and listens well. She will bark and give chase to birds in the garden, but that's about it!

Missy had one litter of pups when she was with her previous owner, but she has since been neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped and is now ready for a new home!

If you are interested in giving this fabulous girl a home and family to call her own and PROMISE not to give up on her again, then complete an online rehoming questionnaire. You'll won't regret it as our Missy is one fantastic dog that will make someone the perfect companion pet.

AGE: ~ 2 Years of Age
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: Siberian Husky
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Adai is a sweet, friendly black & white Siberian Husky who is reluctantly being surrendered along with her companion Bella (separate entry) as dogs are not allowed in the rented property where they are currently living. We hope to find the lovely Adai a new home and family soon as time is running out for her and she'll need to be moved ASAP.

Adai is medium in size. She is now neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. She needs an active lifestyle , but she is also quiet and gentle. She pulls on the lead initially when walking and has good recall. Adai is good with children and other dogs. We don't know how she is with cats but may possibly chase them. Adai enjoys being groomed as her coat can get very thick and is prone to shedding. She isn't used to travelling in a car.

If you can give Adai a new home and family, complete an online rehoming questionnaire. Both Adai and Bella can be rehomed together or separately.

Bella is medium to large in size. She is now neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Bella is inquisitive and playful and like her breed needs an active lifestyle. She walks well on the lead and has good recall. Bella is good with children and would suit an active family with older children. She is good with dogs. Boo and Pistol

More Photos
AGE: DOB Mar 25th, 2015
SEX: Female and Male
BREED: JRTs
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

These two little cuties are looking for a home and family to call their own. They were surrendered to DAR at 7-weeks of age and we've named them Boo and Pistol after Johnny Depp's two Yorkshire Terriers that were recently evicted from Australia after having illegally entered the country via private jet with Johnny.

Our little Boo and Pistol are just as cute and are typical little Jack Russell terriers! Full of irresistible cuteness and character. They are feisty little pups and are currently in foster care where they are being well socialised with other dogs, cats, children and a busy daily family life. Every day is full of adventure for these two and it's difficult not to fall in love with them!

Both have been fully vaccinated and microchipped. They have been on a regular worming programme since in DAR's care.

We would like to rehome the two rascals together as they are inseparable and get on very well. If you are interested in giving these two a new home, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

REMEMBER: If you work full-time, a pup isn't for you as they cannot be left alone for extended periods of time.

Boo - Female pup and is the larger of the two. Boo is a bit quieter of the two. Pistol - Male pup with darker face and smaller than his sister. Pistol is a bit more sociable than his sister.

Molly

AGE: 18 months old
SEX: Female
BREED: Collie x
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Molly is a young female Collie x and she is looking for a new home due to family commitments. She needs a home where she will get lots of attention and exercise. At the moment she is not kept in the house due to family illness but she would love to be in the centre of the action. She is used to children over 10yrs old and would prefer to be an only pet.

Molly has basic lead training, is good on recall when off-lead, and she is house-trained. She is vaccinated and microchipped but not yet neutered. This will be done after she settles in a new home where she can sleep inside during her recovery.

Molly is a playful dog who loves attention and is obedient. Would suit a home as an only pet with someone who can regularly exercise her and care for her. If that sounds like you, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank you.

Mr. Darcy

More Photos
AGE: ~ 3 Years of Age
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Greyhound
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Mr. Darcy was found on April 13th, 2015 in Castlebellingham, Co Louth. He jumped out of a ditch onto the road and fortunately, a woman passing by in a car, stopped and came to his rescue. No owner has come forward to claim Mr. Darcy so we are now looking for a new home and family for him.

Mr. Darcy is a gentle giant. He's quiet and well behaved. He loves to wander and explore in the garden and will occasionally jump into play and race around! He gets on well with other dogs, both big and small, and will seek to play with them, but he'd prefer to be around dog that isn't too boisterous or challenging. Mr. Darcy is house trained now and has been fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped.

Mr. Darcy loves his walks and travels well in the car. In general, he's an easy going dog and would be suitable as an only dog or a companion for a retired person. He does have that Greyhound trait of sniffing out even the smallest trace of some tasty bit of food on the kitchen counter. He also loves his soft furnishings to sleep on.

We don't know how Mr. Darcy is around cats, but we'll walk on the side of caution and assume a NO-CAT policy for his new home.

If you are interested in giving Mr. Darcy a new home to call his own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Toby

AGE: 9 Years of Age
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Mixed Breed - Medium Size
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Toby is being surrendered by his owners due to an extension of both their family and house leaving little time (and space) for Toby.

He is very active for his age. He's house trained but not great on the lead nor good off-lead. He gets on with other dogs, but definitely not cats. He's good with children and people in general. Toby spends his days both indoors and outdoors.

He is described as an inquisitive dog and playful dog. Gentle with children, but may appreciate a quieter household. Toby is a dog that needs to be exercised regularly to burn off his energy.

If you can give Toby a home to live out his final days, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Mia

More Photos
AGE: DOB May 2013
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: St. Bernard
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Mia was surrendered to DAR by her owner as the young child in the family became very frightened of Mia even though Mia just wanted to be her friend.

Mia is now in foster care with a fantastic family who have their own St. Bernard. Mia is a small St. Bernard weighing just over 50kg. She is EXTREMELY strong on the lead and needs to be walked with a halti harness.

Mia's foster family have given us some useful feedback on Mia to help her find the right home. Mia loves nothing more than to lounge around the house; she loves attention and is very affectionate and lovable; she enjoys short walks (and that's not a bad thing!); Mia loves playing with her much larger foster brother as well as sleeping and snoring very loudly! She likes to be his boss but in general is good living with another dog and is curious of other dogs when out walking.

Mia doesn't like confined spaces and this poses challenges when transporting her in a car, but she is getting used to the idea.

In general, Mia is good with children, but would probably suit a family with older teenage children due to her strength. Mia is also very good when meeting new people.

Ideally, we'd like to rehome Mia to a home / family with previous experience with St. Bernards. And if you fit that bill and are interested in giving this lovable lump of a dog a new home and family, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Val

AGE: 3 years old approx.
SEX: Female (Neutered)
BREED: Terrier x
LOCATION: Fostered
DESCRIPTION:

Val is a female Terrier x, about 3 years old. She is medium size, approx. 8-9 kg. Was pregnant when found as a stray in north Dublin and was taken in by North County Dublin SPCA. Val has since had her pups and now needs to find a home of her own.

She is neutered and will be vaccinated and microchipped before adoption. She's a friendly, happy energetic little dog. Can be apprehensive around other dogs so might be best as an only dog or perhaps with an easygoing dog her own size or smaller. She's good on the lead, might need some help with house-training, and she hasn't chased the cat or killed the hens in her current foster home so not a true Terrier!

Sweet dog with big ears, Val needs a loving home where she can have all the security, love and attention she deserves. If you can offer a permanent home to Val, please complete the rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank you.

Tina

More Photos
AGE: 3 Years of Age
SEX: Female
BREED: Collie Cross Breed
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Tina is looking for a new home as life on the farm doesn't really suit her. She's very affectionate and friendly. Her owner is a farmer and he describes Tina as not having a bad bone in her. She gave birth last year to six puppies that DAR rehomed; they were known as the Piperstown pups and first time mum Tina had them in a ditch and took excellent care of them until 6-weeks of age when DAR took the little mites into their care and rehomed all of them.

Tina will be neutered and fully vaccinated before she goes to her new home.

If you can offer Tina a new home and family to call her own, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire. Tina will make a loyal and loving pet to one lucky family!

Skye

More Photos
AGE: 2 years old
SEX: Female (neutered)
BREED: Collie/terrier cross
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Skye was found at the Valley Inn, Dunleer of the 24th of Nov 2013. Nobody came forward to claim her and she is now looking for a new home.

Skye is very friendly and very much indoors dog. She is only a medium sized (12kg) dog and loves attention. What happened to her before she came into our care, we will never know but she is a bit of a nervous dog. More so when you walk with her outside than indoors. Though she is only a medium size dog, she is very strong on the lead and is still learning how to walk on the lead. It will take her a bit of time to trust you, but when she does, you will have a new best friend.

Due to her nervousness a quiet enough home, maybe even with another calm confident dog and kids older than 10 years, will be perfect for her. She is a bit of a monkey and a full secure garden is a must.

The third picture of Skye is not the best but shows her size best.

If you want to offer Skye her forever home, please fill in the rehoming questionnaire and we will get back to you to discuss further.

DESCRIPTION:

Meet Shanks. A very friendly, well behaved guy. And don't you think he is very handsome? He was surrendered due to personal circumstances of his owner. He lacks a bit of confidence but with a bit of help that will be sorted. He is good on the lead but can be a bit excited for the first few minutes. Shanks is very clever though and will pick up very quickly. He is a strong boy so an experienced dog person/family is what he needs. Also kids older than 10 years will suit him well.

Mo

More Photos
AGE: DOB Oct 28th, 2013
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: Mixed Breed
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Mo is looking for another new home. She didn't work out with her last adoptive family as she doesn't like to be left on her own during the day so we are looking for a family that will have a lot of time to give to the lovely Mo. She has loads of very good qualities that shouldn't be dismissed. Mo is a very affectionate girl that loves her cuddles and having her shoulders rubbed. She loves being in the company of people and although she is good around children, she can be a bit giddy so may not be suitable around young children.

She is best walked on a harness and can get a bit excited when she spots another dog when out walking, but she is good around other dogs. She knows basic commands but will need a bit more training and is eager to learn.

Mo has been neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. She is medium in size.

If you can give Mo a new home and family and promise not to give up on her, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Sumo

More Photos
AGE: 9.5yrs
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Lab x
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Sumo is a mature male mixed breed, probably Lab x, and he's looking for a new home. He was reluctantly surrendered by his owners because their young baby was allergic. Sumo is an ex-DAR dog, adopted as a puppy in November 2005. He is a family dog, friendly with adults and children (5yrs+ only) but hates cats, so no small furries please!

Sumo is a large, strong dog, active and in good health. He'll be 10 years old this summer. He is vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. He is house-trained, strong on the lead and good in the car. He sleeps inside and is used to being part of the family. He has always been an only dog so would probably prefer to continue this way although he might tolerate a female. All dogs are individuals and there's dogs they like and dogs they don't so it would very much depend on the dog in question. He needs a dog experienced owner and ideally a man as his main carer as that is what he was used to.

Sumo LOVES his food and will steal from the table or counter if the opportunity presents itself. He also LOVES company and really would prefer company for most of the day. And finally, he LOVES the ball and loves to have someone to play ball with him.

If you can offer handsome Sumo a new home, please complete our Rehoming Questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank you.

Sasha

AGE: 7 years old
SEX: Female (Neutered)
BREED: Terrier x
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

SASHA is a female Terrier x, medium size (12.4kg) and she is 7 years old. She has plenty of energy, great temperament and loves company. She is active and loves her walks but couldn't go for miles (even though she'd want to!) due to an old leg injury from when she was a puppy. She is vaxed, neutered and microchipped. She was surrendered due to family commitments in Nov 2013 and was on trial in new home but as the country property was not fully secure she had started to wander and ended up in Louth Dog Pound. So a secure garden is essential.

Sasha is friendly and affectionate and has lived with another dog in her previous home and her trial home and with four dogs in her current foster home, so the company of another dog would be good for her, ideally a male either her own size or bigger. Sasha is a bit afraid of other dogs initially and can snarl if they are in her face but soon becomes friends. She is 100% house-trained and very much a house dog who just wants to be part of the family. If you can offer Sasha a home, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank You.

AGE: 4 Years of Age

LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Holly is being surrendered by her owner and we hope we can find this lovely girl and new home and family.

Holly is medium / large in size, is neutered and fully vaccinated. She gets along great with children and is well behaved in the house. She is house trained and travels well in the car. Holly is an inside / outside dog and is used to be being very much a part of the family.

Holly is an alpha dog and will get on with some dogs, but not all dogs. Cats are definitely a NO NO and we don't think that Holly will ever make friends with them. Holly is very strong on the lead and will need an experienced dog handler. She doesn't always come back immediately upon recall when off the lead, but will eventually return.

DESCRIPTION:

TEDDY is a female Akita or possibly Akita/German Shepherd crossbreed. She's approx. two years old, fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. She's sociable with other dogs but would be best with a big playmate who can keep up with her energy. Cats and other small furries are a no-no. She loves the outdoors and is not a barker - it's an Akita thing - and she is a confident and loyal dog. Due to her size and breed, Teddy will need an experienced owner who has large dog or ideally Akita experience. She would suit a household with children over 12 years of age. A country home would be best for Teddy where she can have lots of outdoor space and company.

BREED: Collie x
LOCATION: Fostered
DESCRIPTION:

Buster is a mature male Collie x and he needs a new home. He was originally found as a stray along with his son Bubba who has since been rehomed and although their owner was found, unfortunately he did not want them back as he was no longer in a position to care for them. Buster is currently in kennels. He is fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped.

Buster needs a home where he can have human company and plenty of attention and cuddles. He is still very active and loves his walks. He had a full top to toe health check recently while in the vets for neutering and passed with flying colours. There's plenty of life in the old boy yet! Buster was mainly an outdoor dog in his previous home but has really taken to his home comforts and deserves nothing less in his twilight years.

Buster has had a tough break being surrendered at this stage of his life so we are hoping to find him the home he deserves with someone who will love him and give him the time and attention he needs. If you think that might be you, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process.

Shadow

AGE: 18 months approx.
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Husky/Malamute
LOCATION: In kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Shadow is a handsome young male Husky/Malamute and he is ready and waiting for the right home. He was found in October 2013 dodging traffic on the dual carriageway in Drogheda, Co. Louth. Despite best efforts to find his owner, none came forward.

Shadow is a large dog with a good temperament and like all Huskies or Malamutes, has a lot of energy and needs an active lifestyle and a VERY secure garden. He is fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. Shadow was born with a dodgy knee on his hind right leg but it causes him no problems. He may not be the dog for you if you want him to go long distance running but walking, playing and normal activities pose no problems. Shadow is a bright, agile and active dog and he needs company for most of the day, a large secure property (ideally in the country as he loves the outdoors) and another dog for company - preferably female. He is currently in kennels but we know the right home is out there waiting for him somewhere.

BREED: Spaniel Cross Breed
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Timmy was originally found as a stray on 17 June 2013, Windmill Road, Drogheda Co Louth, however his owner was subsequently found and wished to surrender him for rehoming.

Timmy is fully vaccinated and neutered. He is a small to medium size dog who is very friendly and very active. He gets along well with children and other dogs; he isn't as good with cats.

Timmy will require an owner with previous dog experience and one who is willing to give this young boy the amount of exercise and activity he needs. Timmy requires a secure garden and isn't suitable to be left on his own in the garden as he easily gets bored and will look elsewhere for entertainment.

If you can provide Timmy with the type of home he needs, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire. Currently Timmy is in private boarding kennels and although he has a lot of playmates, he'd like a home and family to call his own.

Scan

AGE: ~ 1-3 Years
SEX: Male
BREED: Spaniel Cross Breed - Medium Size
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Scan was found running around Peter Street / Laurence Street in Drogheda Town Centre, Drogheda County Louth on Friday October 12th, 2013. A kind member of the public took him in for fear he would get hit by a car.

No one has come forward to reclaim Scan and now he's looking for a new home and family to call his own.

Scan has now been neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. He is a lovely dog and is well behaved in the house. Scan is a very active dog and loves to run around sniffing here, there and everywhere. He is strong on the lead so will need some lead training. He's good off the lead and will stay within eyesight and come back when called.

We suspect that Scan was a hunting dog at one time as he is alert and active. Scan isn't boisterous or destructive.

He seems to be fine around other dogs and will give chase to cats.

We hope to get some more photos of Scan to update his profile.

If you can give this wonderful fellow a new home to call his own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

AGE: 3 Years of Age
SEX: Male
BREED: Dalmatian
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Mylo was reluctantly surrendered by his owner due to relocation to New Zealand for work. We hope to find this handsome boy a new home and family.

Mylo is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. He was originally acquired by his owner from a breeder as a pup. Mylo is a typical energetic Dalmatian that will need someone who is willing to give him the exercise and time he needs. Mylo is very strong on the lead and will need some basic training, but on the plus side, Mylo listens and responds well to training. He isn't aggressive with either people or other dogs, but Mylo hasn't learned how to greet other dogs politely so he usually approaches them full of energy and bounce, which may be a bit off putting to both the dogs and their owners.

Mylo shows a lot of promise in the right hands of someone who is familiar with the Dalmatian temperament and will to give them the time. Oh, and did we say that Mylo is a very handsome boy?

If you can give Mylo the home he needs, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.
