DAR Dogs Needing Homes
Please browse through all of our available dogs. We do the best to match the known temperament, breed, age, and level of activity of our dogs to potential owners. Some dogs require more training than others; some would suit being rehomed as the only dog or would prefer canine companionship. If you have any additional queries on the dogs below, please contact us at info@dar.ie
All of our dogs are vaccinated, neutered (if older than 6 months), de-wormed & de-flea'd. All dogs receive a health check from local vets. Drogheda Animal Rescue will do its best to assess the character, temperament, and level of obedience of each dog before it is rehomed.
Drogheda Animal Rescue requests a donation when adopting a dog. All donations are used solely for the care of our animals and will help with the expense incurred by Drogheda Animal Rescue for veterinarian costs associated with vaccinations, neutering, worming & de-flea'ing.
The DONATION GUIDELINE below is the minimum amount that will cover our vaccination & neutering costs only. Please bear in mind that many of our dogs are kept in costly boarding kennels until homes can be found, and Drogheda Animal Rescue absorbs this cost.
- Un-Vaccinated Puppies: €25.00
- Vaccinated Dogs & Puppies: €65.00
-
Vaccinated & Neutered Dogs: €150
-
Microchipping: €35.00
All potential owners must complete a rehoming questionnaire and all homes are vetted. Please see section on Adoption Process - Dogs for further details on our adoption policy.

Bobo
AGE: < 2 YearsSEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Terrier
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:
This little fellow was taken in by a member of the public on the Seapoint Golf Course, Termonfeckin, Co Louth on Saturday July 24th, 2010. He had been seen around the area the week prior.
He wasn't wearing a collar nor is he microchipped. No owners have come forward for little Bobo so we are now looking for a new home for him.
Bobo is a very affectionate little fellow and gets on with other dogs. Being a terrier, he isn't the best of friends with cats and will give them chase. Bobo came to us with a limp in his hind leg and the vet reckons it is due to a chronic cruciate ligament injury, so little Bobo is receiving treatment for it.
Bobo loves companionship and needs a very secure garden as he is an escape artist. He is getting much better on the lead, as he refused to walk on a lead before and would run and hide covering his eyes with his paws at the sight of a lead. His fosterers are doing an excellent job with little Bobo and we see improvements with him daily.
If you can offer this little fellow a new home and family, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Louie
AGE: 2.5 Years OldSEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Border Collie
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:
Louie is a 2-1/2 year old Border Collie looking for a new home. He is neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped. He's house trained, travels well in the car, and lead trained. Louie is an active collie who loves his excercise, beach runs, and chasing after the ball. His current owners do not have the time or space to provide adequate excercise for Louie.
Some facts about Louie: 1. He doesn't like cats, 2. Hasn't been around children much, therefore Louie's behaviour around children is not completely known so we'd recommend Louie be rehomed to a household either with no young children or with children > 12 years of age, 3. In general likes other dogs, but isn't keen on German Shepherds as he had a bad experience with one, 4. He is a VERY intelligent dog, 5. Picks and chooses his human friends, and in general is a lovely and friendly dog that requires someone who has the time and energy a young Border Collie needs.
If you are interested in Louie, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

LOCATION: Surrender by owner
DESCRIPTION:
Levi is a large male Rottweiler who was rescued from owners who were not looking after him properly. He was underweight, lacked attention, and training. Levi is neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped. Levi gets along with female dogs, but not males. He is a lively and energetic fellow who will need an experienced owner to look after him. He loves affection and loves to be petted. Due to his size, strength and over exuberant nature, he would be best rehomed to a family with no young children or children over the age of 15 years old.
Levi currently is used to living outside and sleeping in a kennel. He is being lead trained on a Halti as he wasn't lead trained by his original owners.
If you can give Levi the home and attention he needs, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Max the PointerX
AGE: 2 Years OldSEX: Male
BREED: PointerX
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:
Max was originally adopted from Collon Sanctuary about one year ago. He was emaciated, very nervous, and lacked social skills as he had been tied up and left outdoors. His new owner spent a lot of time bringing Max back to health and teaching him basic obedience, but more importantly, he gave Max the love and affection he craved more than anything else.
Max is described as an intelligent dog with a wonderful temperament. He is great with other dogs and is kind and playful with kittens and cats. Being a Pointer, Max loves excercise and running freely along the beach. Because of Max's size and ocassional excitability, he would best suit a household with children > 12 years of age.
Max's owner will be starting a new job soon which requires him to be away from home quite a bit, so he has asked Drogheda Animal Rescue to find Max a new home.
Max is vaccinated and microchipped. He will be neutered before he is rehomed.
If you can offer this gentle giant a home, please complete an on-line rehoming questionnaire.
P.S. We will update Max's photo portfolio soon!

Casper
AGE: 12-14 Years OldSEX: Male
BREED: Collie Cross
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:
Casper is an elderly dog looking for a new home. He is neutered and fully vaccinated. Don't let his age fool you, he is still a very active dog!
Casper's owners would like to rehome him as Casper gets very agitated with all the surrounding dogs living in his estate and once had an argument with the neighbour's Jack Russell. Casper is used to being around children and gets along very well with them. Casper is house trained and a friendly dog. The ideal home for him would be one that is quiet without any other dogs where he can live out his remaining years in peace with plenty of love and opportunity for excercise.
If you can offer Casper a good home, please complete an on-line rehoming questionnaire.

Elmo
AGE: ~ 1 Year of AgeSEX: Male
BREED: Patterdale Terrier
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:
This little fellow followed a member of the public home on Sunday evening, June 6th, 2010, while she was walking her dog in the Hill of Rath area, Drogheda, County Louth. He wasn't wearing a collar nor is microchipped. No owners have come forward to claim this dog, now called Elmo, so he is looking for a new home.
We have learned a lot about Elmo since and we now believe he is a Patterdale Terrier or cross breed. His temperament and behaviour certainly seem to match the characteristics of a Patterdale Terrier, so we are looking for an experienced dog owner for this little fellow or one who is familiar with the breed. Cats and other small animals are definitely out of the question! Elmo is currently in foster care with two other dogs much larger than himself, and he seems to get along well with them. He needs a lot of excercise and stimulus due to his breed and is definitely not suitable to be left alone in the garden as terriers are notorious at finding an escape route if they become bored or if something catches their attention. Elmo seems to get along well with children and was an excellent and well behaved dog during his participation in the last Drogheda Animal Rescue collection day in Bettystown! However it would be advisable to rehome him to a household with children > 12 years of age as we don't know how Elmo would behave living with children.
He is a great little traveller in the car and is great in the house. Elmo has been neutered and is fully vaccinated.
If you can offer little Elmo (with a big dog attitude) a home, please complete an on-line rehoming questionnaire.

Barney
AGE: 9 Years OldSEX: Male
BREED: Labrador
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:
Barney is an older Labrador that came into the care of DAR as his elderly owner passed away, leaving Barney on his own in the house. A kind woman regularly fed and looked in on Barney to make sure he was safe while we worked on finding him alternative accommodation. Barney is now in the care of Drogheda Animal Rescue and has since been in foster care. He has been neutered and is now fully vaccinated.
Barney is described as a lovely dog, gets along well with children, doesn't seem to have any issues with other dogs, but doesn't seem find cats agreeable and will chase them. He isn't great on the lead and not good at travelling in the car, but is an all around good dog looking for a home to live out the remainder of his years.
If you can offer Barney a new home, please complete an on-line rehoming questionnaire. Older dogs are good because what you see is what you get! Also, you don't have to worry about the pleasures of house training or going through the puppy chewing phase! And Barney won't be demanding a 5-mile walk everyday with fly-ball classes every evening!

Phantom
AGE: ~ 3 Years OldSEX: Male
BREED: Collie / Spaniel X
LOCATION: Surrender
DESCRIPTION:
Please help Phantom. This handsome dog wandered into his current owner's home in County Mayo, on the Mayo / Galway / Roscommon border, about 3 months ago and never left. Unfortunately, they cannot keep him as he has started chasing their chickens. He is described as bright, obedient, very attentive, gets along well with other dogs, cats, (but not chickens), and seems well behaved around young children. He doesn't like to be confined and loves the outdoor life.
Unfortunately, Phantom was also diagnoised with a heart murmur by the local Mayo vet. His owner has tried to rehome him locally through other rescues, but no luck, so she came to Drogheda Animal Rescue for assistance.
If you can offer Phantom a forever home, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire. Phantom is described as being a one person dog, very loyal and very obedient.

Jake
AGE: 9-10 Months of AgeSEX: Male
BREED: Labrador Cross Breed
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:
Jake's story is one heard too often in Ireland. Jake was ill and taken to the local vet by his owner. Jake had to stay in the vet for several days, as he had contracted the deadly parvovirus and needed time to recover. Fortunately for Jake he pulled through his illness, but unfortunately, his owner abandoned Jake at the vet, never to be heard or seen again.
Jake has fully recovered from his ordeal and is now looking for a new home with owners who won't abandon him ever again. He has been fully vaccinated now and is neutered.
Jake will need a lot of training, as this stage of his puppy life seems to have been missed. He is lively, curious, and will need someone who is devoted to training a dog and providing the amount of excercise and stimulus such an active breed requires.
If you are interested in giving Jake a second chance, please complete an on-line rehoming questionnaire.

Herma
AGE: ~ 1 Year of AgeSEX: Female
BREED: Collie Cross Breed
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:
Herma was found on April 07th, 2010 in Harmans Garden, Drogheda, Co Louth. Sadly, no owners have come forward to reclaim Herma, so she is now looking for a new home and family.
Herma is a large and very friendly dog. She loves other dogs and gets on well with people. She is still young and can be a bit boisterous when playing so a new home with children > 12 years of age would be required. Herma still needs a bit of work with obedience training, but has all the makings of a good pet with a little effort and time put into training her. Above all, Herma loves her cuddles!
If you can offer Herma a loving home please complete an on-line rehoming questionnaire.
Herma will be fully vaccinated and neutered before she is rehomed.

Rocky
AGE: 2 Years OldSEX: Male
BREED: Terrier
LOCATION: Surrender - In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:
Rocky is a 2-year old male terrier looking for a new home. Rocky is a small / medium size dog and appears to be a Yorkshire Terrier Cross. He is neutered and housetrained, gets along well with other dogs and children. Rocky is a lively and inquisitive little fellow, however, he doesn't like cats, but what terrier does! He was taken in by a relative when Rocky's owner passed away, however, the two larger older dogs in the new household did not like little Rocky and keep bullying him, so Rocky was put up for rehoming.
If you can provide this little fellow a kind and caring home with plenty of opportunity for excercise and stimulus, please complete an on-line rehoming questionnaire. Rocky would not be suitable for children < 12 years of age due to his overly exuberant nature!
P.S. Rocky is an active, INQUISITIVE, little dog. He loves human companionship and attention. Like all rescue dogs, Rocky needs to be given the opportunity and courtesy to settle into a new household as he can get a bit stressed when put into a new environment. Only true & experienced terrier lovers need apply!

Trixie
AGE: ~ 5 Years of AgeSEX: Female
BREED: Terrier
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner - In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:
Trixie is a small, tricoloured, shaggy terrier, approximately 5 years of age. She was surrendered to DAR on March 01st, 2010 because her previous owners were unable to care for her properly. She is currently living happily in a foster home with three other dogs and four cats. Trixie has some real terrier traits that a new owner should be aware of: she chases cats outside the house, she hides bones and toys in the house and garden, and she likes her own way. However, she is also playful with other dogs, affectionate and gentle with people of all ages, happy to adapt to new routines, and she will form a very strong bond with a new owner. Trixie particularly likes women, going on trips in the car, and sitting up on laps in front of the telly. She needs an indoor home where she will have company for a good part of the day, regular walks, and plenty of love.
A recent vet check revealed that Trixie has the beginnings of a heart murmur which is easily managed with inexpensive medication. This is not an uncommon occurrence in older dogs and is not causing her any problems at the moment; she is a lively dog who loves her walks and loves to play, but it could become an issue in the future, and any potential owner should be aware of it and provide Trixie with a check-up at their local vet every 6 months. Otherwise she is a healthy and happy dog, and it would be great to see her get the loving home she deserves.
Trixie is neutered, fully vaccinated & microchipped.
If you can offer Trixie a new home, please complete an on-line rehoming questionnaire.
Oh yes, Trixie isn't winking at you; she sustained an eye injury when she was younger, so only has one eye.

Sam
AGE: 2 yearsSEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Mastiff x
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:
Sam is a very large, male, Mastiff x and he is 2 years old. He has been reluctantly surrendered by his owner due to a change in personal circumstances. Sam is very big (56kg) and very strong but is friendly, good with people and other dogs. He is housetrained, vaccinated and has been neutered by DAR. Sam is not good on the lead and really needs a home with space where he can exercise off-lead.
Sam is good on recall, loves his exercise and loves to play. He does not like cats but is good with kids (12+yrs due to his size) and previously lived with teenage children. Due to his size, build and strength, Sam will only be rehomed to experienced dog owners who have owned this size of dog before and have the space Sam needs. A country home would be ideal for Sam (secure garden or dog-run is essential) and he is very much a man's dog! Although he loves his walks and playing with his toys, Sam can also be quite lazy and is happy to crash out after his walk. He is a magnificent animal, has a great temperament and really has a lot to offer as a great pet and companion in the right home.
If you can offer a suitable home to Sam, please complete our rehoming questionnaire.

Bibi
AGE: 2 years approx.SEX: Female (Neutered)
BREED: BoerBoel (South African Mastiff)
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:
Bibi is a female, 2 year old, BoerBoel (South African Mastiff) and she is looking for a new home where she can be the only dog and live as part of the family. She is ginger and white and is very big and strong. Bibi is fully vaccinated and has been neutered.
She was living outside, in an area with a large dog pen, kennel etc., along with three other large dogs but she wants to be inside with the family and had started fighting with the other dogs. She is now in DAR's care and has become a firm favourite with those that are looking after her. Bibi is good on the lead and good in the car and loves her walks. She also loves her food and her bed and is a big sleeper! She is good with people she knows but can be a little reserved initially with strangers but soon makes friends.
Bibi is a very loving dog who wants to be the centre of her owner's universe. She loves attention and fuss and does not want to share with other dogs, especially where food is concerned. She can be boisterous, is a jumper and can clear a 5ft fence, so a secure garden with 6ft surround is essential. Bibi deserves a loving, secure home as an only pet, with an owner who has big dog experience and she will be a wonderful, devoted companion in return.
If you can offer Bibi a suitable home, please complete our rehoming questionnaire.

DESCRIPTION:
Lofty the Lurcher was found in Nov 2009 when she wandered into Petmania in Drogheda Retail Park. Her owners have not been found, so she is now looking for new home. Lofty is female and has beautiful colouring - fawn with grey on her face - and she is 9 months old. She is slightly built, perhaps with some Whippet in her rather than Greyhound, so she will be more medium than large when fully grown. She is a real pet and loves her home comforts. Keli
AGE: 1 year old approx.SEX: Female (Neutered)
BREED: Collie x
LOCATION: Found as stray, Kilmainham Wood, Co. Meath
DESCRIPTION:
Keli is a lovely gold lurcher with pretty white markings. She is about a year old. She was very nervous when she was first found in Kilmainham wood, Co. Meath at the end of August 2008. Her confidence has grown and she gets on well now with people (especially children), dogs and even cats.
Keli's had a tougher time than most because unexpectedly she gave birth to 7 pups in November 2008, all black and white collie crosses. She was a terrific mother and is getting back to herself now that they all have been rehomed. She is vaccinated and neutered. Keli is an active dog and does the 'seagull run' daily along the beach. She is obedient while off the lead and walks well on it. She is well behaved in the house.
An ideal home for Keli would be someone at home all/part of the day as she enjoys company and who can give her the exercise she's used to. An experienced dog owner is required as she can still show nervousness at times but she has come a long way from her earlier days. If you feel you can offer Keli the secure and happy home that she is searching for please complete our rehoming questionnaire.
