DAR Dogs Needing Homes

Please browse through all of our available dogs. We do the best to match the known temperament, breed, age, and level of activity of our dogs to potential owners. Some dogs require more training than others; some would suit being rehomed as the only dog or would prefer canine companionship. If you have any additional queries on the dogs below, please contact us at info@dar.ie .

PLEASE NOTE: We do not have a facility for holding all of our dogs. They are kept in private boarding kennels, foster homes or still with their owners who are seeking to surrender them. ALL VIEWINGS are by APPOINTMENT ONLY.

All of our dogs are vaccinated, neutered (if older than 6 months), de-wormed & de-flea'd. All dogs receive a health check from local vets. Drogheda Animal Rescue will do its best to assess the character, temperament, and level of obedience of each dog before it is rehomed.

Drogheda Animal Rescue requests a donation when adopting a dog. All donations are used solely for the care of our animals and will help with the expense incurred by Drogheda Animal Rescue for veterinarian costs associated with vaccinations, neutering, worming & de-flea'ing.

The DONATION GUIDELINE below is the minimum amount that will cover our vaccination & neutering costs only. Please bear in mind that many of our dogs are kept in costly boarding kennels until homes can be found, and Drogheda Animal Rescue absorbs this cost.

  • Vaccinated Dogs & Puppies: €65.00
  • Vaccinated & Neutered Dogs: €150
  • Microchipping: Free of Charge for all DAR Dogs

All potential owners must complete a rehoming questionnaire and all homes are vetted. Please see section on Adoption Process - Dogs for further details on our adoption policy.

Perrie

More Photos
AGE: DOB Aug 01st, 2014 (Estimate)
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: Terrier Cross Breed
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Perrie was found in Lusk, North County Dublin on April 12th, 2015. She was frantically running along a busy street, distressed and lost. A kind member of the public came to her rescue as Perrie was in danger of being hit by a car. No owner ever came forward to claim Perrie; she was on the thin side when found so may have been on the run for several days.

Perrie has since been in foster care with a wonderful couple who adore her and planned to adopt her, but both are moving abroad within the United Arab Emirates and cannot take Perrie with them. So, Perrie is now looking for a new home and family to love and care for her.

Perrie has been neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped. She is a medium size dog with a slight build. Perrie prefers the company of humans to other dogs as she can be dominate around other dogs. She definitely does not like cats. Perrie is very affectionate and loving with her human companions. She is clean in the house and not destructive.

Perrie pulls on the lead while walking, so the use of a harness provides much better control. Her foster parents have been working on her lead training and social skills while walking and meeting other dogs. Perrie is much better when she is taken out for a jog as she tends to focus her attention on running rather than what is going on around her.

Ideally Perrie would suit an owner with no other dogs and definitely no cats. Perrie hasn't been around young children and hasn't shown any aggression or dominance around people, but we'd recommend that children be 12+ years of age due to Perrie's active and exuberant nature.

If you are interested in giving Perrie a home to call her own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Jack

More Photos
AGE: 1 year approx.
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Terrier
LOCATION: Fostered
DESCRIPTION:

This is Jack who was reluctantly surrendered by his owners because he was a serial escaper and family commitments meant that there wasn't enough time for to give Jack the time and attention he deserved. Jack is a very happy, friendly dog who loves people and the company of other dogs. He is about a year old and is a very small terrier.

Currently he is being fostered with a family who have a cat and two elderly dogs but although the dogs are putting up with his exuberant, friendly nature, Jack would be better suited to a home with a younger dog who he can play with whenever he wants. Likewise the cat stands her ground so Jack is learning to appreciate and understand the feline rules. His fosterers love him to bits but feel their elderly dogs have to come first but fortunately Jack can stay there until he finds his forever home.

Jack is neutered, chipped and vaccinated and in good health. He is also house-trained. He would need a very secure garden as being small he can squeeze through gaps which is what he used to do. Jack walks fine on a lead. As he is an very friendly dog, inquisitive in everything, a family where someone is home part-time and where he'd have the company of a playful dog is the type of home we are seeking. He is fine with children but as he is still young and could nip, children of 8 years and up may be more suitable. If you are interested in Jack, please fill out the rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in the rehoming process.

Flash & Blue

More Photos
AGE: 10yrs & 9yrs
SEX: Male (N) & Female (N)
BREED: Springer Spaniel & Whippet
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Flash is a 10 year old male Springer Spaniel and Blue is a 9 year old female Whippet. They are looking for a new home together. Blue was originally a DAR dog back in 2007 and was adopted by Flash's owners as company for Flash. Ever since then they have been best buddies. The reason they are now looking for a new home is that their teenage owners have gone away to college and Flash & Blue do not have the company and attention they need and deserve.

They are very much still loved by their family but due to other family circumstances and the boys now living a long distance away, it has reluctantly been decided to try to find a new loving, caring home for these two house-dogs. They have always been kept indoors and as they are both now mature dogs, they need to continue enjoying the home comforts that they have been used to.

Flash is a little challenging, very good natured and loving but he has a few traits such as pulling on the lead and is not so great off the lead. He would need a secure garden to keep him safe as he has been known to scale high fences in the past but he is calming down in his older years. He is a loving and loyal dog who just wants to please.

Blue is very good on and off the lead. She likes nothing better than a stroll of the beach and then to laze in front of fire for the rest of the day. Flash is pretty much the same, he is still an active dog on his walks but once he has his walk and some food (he loves his food!), he is happy to sleep and snooze the day away.

They are hoping to be rehomed together as they have such a lovely bond and truly love each other. Blue calms Flash and Flash reassures Blue. They are a sweet and quirky pair and would certainly liven up any home. If you can offer Flash & Blue a suitable home, please let complete a rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process.

Monti

More Photos
AGE: < 2 Years of Age
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Lurcher
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Monti was orginally found as a stray in County Kildare in January 20th, 2016. No owner was found for Monti and it is believed that he was deliberately strayed. His finder took very good care of him, however could not keep him and has surrendered him to DAR to rehome.

Monti has been neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. He is a very relaxed and easy going dog. He's good with other dogs, people, and children. His behaviour arouond cats is unknown. He has only been walked on the lead and walks well on it; he hasn't been tried off-lead yet. He's a large Lurcher; about the size of a Greyhound.

Monti loves human companionship and doesn't like to be locked in. We are looking for a home for Monti where he will have someone with him more frequently than not and will make Monti a part of the family. He enjoys walks and then will crash out and snooze the rest of the day.

If you can offer this handsome lad a new home and family to call his own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Kiwi

More Photos
AGE: 4 years old
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Jack Russell
LOCATION: In kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Kiwi is a male Jack Russell, 4 years old. Unfortunately Kiwi nipped a passing jogger so he needs a new home with a secure garden. He is a friendly fella and a typical terrier! He is neutered, microchipped and just needs a booster vax which will be done before rehoming. Kiwi is housetrained but has mainly been an outdoor dog and slept in the shed, along with a female JRT. He travels will in the car but pulls a bit on the lead because his exercise has mainly been off-lead at home on a big property, so he'll need time to get used to regular lead-walking. Not good on recall because he's too easily distracted. Fine with other dogs but probably best with females as that's what he's been used to. Being a Terrier, cats or other small furries are probably a not a good idea.

Kiwi is a handsome little chap and will make a great pet and companion for someone. He'd be very happy living in the house and must have a secure garden for the safely of passing joggers!

If you can offer Kiwi a suitable new home, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank you.

Sadie

More Photos
AGE: January 01st, 2015 (estimate)
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: German Shepherd
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Sadie was found on November 10th, 2015 tied to railings on the south quays in Drogheda Co Louth by a man who had noticed her tied up for several hours without any sight of an owner. Sadie was becoming increasingly agitated and upset so he took her to the local vet; she wasn't wearing a collar nor was microchipped. Sadie was heavily pregnant at the time and gave birth to 12-puppies on November 29th while in the care of DAR.

Sadie was a fantastic mum and took very good care of her little family. Of the twelve pups, only eight survived and all have since found new homes. Now it's Sadie's turn to find a home and family to call her own.

Sadie has since been fully vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered. She is still young and playful. She gets on well with other dogs and loves to play with them. Sadie hasn't been around cats so it's unknown of her behaviour around them. It is believed that Sadie may be a Belgian Shepherd. She is slight in size weighing around 28-kg. Sadie is extremely agile so a very secure garden is needed. She hasn't been lead trained; she is house trained and travels well in the car. Sadie is very bright girl and is very affectionate with those she meets.

If you are interested in giving Sadie a home where she will be well taken care of and loved, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

BREED: Terrier
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Buddy was found straying in Mell, Drogheda, Co Louth on December 1st, 2015 and followed some lads to their work place. He was taken into the care of DAR on December 12th, despite numerous postings and appeals for an owner to come forward, no one has claimed Buddy, so he now looking for a new home.

Buddy is a LARGE terrier weighing just under 12-kg. He has since been neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped since in our care. He is very agile and athletic and loves playing football with the kids. Buddy is very strong on the lead, but walks well with a harness, and hasn't been tried off-lead. He gets on well with bigger dogs, however, DOES NOT LIKE SMALL FURRY DOGS OR CATS. Buddy is great with people and children and loves the attention. He is very energetic, so wouldn't suit a household with small children.

Buddy is a gentle and agreeable chap. He's a clean dog and isn't boisterous or destructive. He travels well in the car and loves to go for trips in the car.

Belle

More Photos
AGE: 4-5 Years of Age
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: German Shepherd
LOCATION: In Foster Care - Surrender
DESCRIPTION:

Belle is a typical German Shepherd and will make someone a loyal and devoted companion. Belle is a pure breed GSD and is very well behaved. She is clean in house, quiet, and very affectionate. She listens well and is very obedient. Belle is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped.

Belle would be best as the only dog in the household but is currently in foster care with four male dogs. She can get along with other dogs, but not females. She can be a bit of a bully at times around other dogs and can get jealous when other dogs are around her master or mistress. If she was paired with another dog, ideally it would need to be a dog that isn't going to challenge or bully her. She can be quite playful with young dogs. Belle hasn't shown any signs of food aggression.

Belle travels well in the car and loves going places. She doesn't tend to want run away or stray. She's very strong on the lead and can get quite protective or boisterous when on the lead around other dogs.

Like many Shepherds, Belle is very sensitive and a bit of a baby if she is touched unexpectedly so we suspect somewhere during her life, she wasn't treated very well.

We hope to find this fantastic dog a home where she will settle in and live out her life. Ideally, she would like a home where she can go for long walks and explore, but have the comforts of a warm and cozy house. Belle is very good inside the house and sleeps quietly throughout the night. We don't know how Belle is around young children, so a home with children over the age of 12-years of age would be best. And no cats! Belle would be suit someone with previous German Shepherd experience.

If you would like to adopt the beautiful Belle, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Trixie

More Photos
AGE: ~ 2 Years of Age
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: Terrier X Beagle
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Little Trixie was found in Millmount Abbey Estates, Co Meath on August 26th, 2015. She literally ran into someone's house. With a bit of investigative work, we found out Trixie's origins and indeed her story is a sad one.

Trixie was originally rehomed from another rescue to an elderly man in July 2015. Trixie became too possessive and protective of the man especially around his young grandchild, so Trixie was duly packed into the car and returned to the rescue. However, she never made it back into the rescue as the man gave her to three men in a van who were looking for a hunting terrier. How Trixie escaped and ended up in Millmount Abbey is a mystery, but little did we know that she was pregnant when found in August and tragically, Trixie lost her one and only pup, as it was born dead.

It was then discovered that Trixie had a luxating patella (knee cap that was slipping out of place) so she had surgery to repair her knee as it would cause problems in the future. It took awhile for Trixie to recover from her ordeal, both the loss of her pup and knee operation, but with the help of a loving and patient foster family, Trixie is now in flying form. She has since been neutered and fully vaccinated; she is also microchipped.

Trixie is a great little dog and has been passed from pillar to post, so we are looking for a forever home for this fantastic little dog packed with personality. However, she has a few issues that can be tackled easily for the experienced dog owner.

Trixie needs to be the only dog in the home as she is extremely jealous and possessive. She does get on with other dogs, but seems to have a particular fear and issue with large dogs, but she is fine when meeting dogs when out for walks. Trixie doesn't like cats and she doesn't like toddlers. We don't know why, but she just doesn't like young children. So, children in any home must be 12+years of age. Trixie does have separation anxiety and will cry and howl when left on her own especially at night, but her foster family have found that this is only short lived and Trixie will calm down. All she really wants is to be loved and given the chance, she'll sneak into her master's bed.

We feel that Trixie's issues are over-shadowed by the fact that she is just one tremendous little dog that is packed with personality. If you can offer Trixie a home to call her own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Benny

More Photos
AGE: 1 year old approx
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Terrier x
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Benny is a small-medium, timid, male Jack Russell x Staffie/Pointer, about a year old who for the past two months has been learning that it is normal dog behaviour to go for a walk on a lead and to sleep indoors. He had a rough start before DAR came to his rescue and is frightened of most things as he never encountered things that other dogs living indoors or going for a walk experience daily. However despite it all, Benny is a gentle, friendly little fellow who wants desperately to please and fit in and in two months he is almost there. Benny is great with people, children and other dogs and his new home MUST have another resident dog as he feels secure when they are there. He grew up with another dog and Benny was shattered when his previous owners rehomed his buddy. In his fosterer's home, there are three dogs and Benny is particularly attached to a female of similar size to himself. We're not sure how he is with cats but his breed might suggest he mightn't be compatible with them even though he is timid. Benny is now walking and exploring while off the lead, keeping close, and he always returns when called and he is good at walking on lead. He is very friendly with every dog and person he meets. Benny is vaccinated, microchipped, neutered, and patiently waiting for his forever home with a friendly doggie buddy. If you can offer a suitable home to Benny, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank you.

Trevor

More Photos
AGE: < 5 Years of Age
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Brittany Spaniel
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Trevor was found in Donore, Co Meath on Sunday, March 29th, 2015. He wandered into a woman's garden where he remained until a DAR volunteer came out to collect him the next day. He was extremely thin with his ribs and bones sticking out, and had a deep gash on his leg. No one has come to reclaim Trevor, so now he's looking for a new home of his own.

It took some time to get Trevor back to health and he is now fully fit, neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Trevor is in foster care with a farming family, many other dogs, cats, and children. He loves the busy farming life and simply loves being outside where he can see everything that's going on, and roll around in the muck and mud to his heart's content! Trevor doesn't like to be locked in and actually likes to sleep outside. He also loves swimming in the sea and loves his bubble baths when he gets too mucky.

He has shown to be a loyal dog that won't stray and sticks close to home and his pack. He doesn't have any road sense though so a secure garden is a must! Trevor gets on with most dogs, but prefers female dogs. Although Trevor is in a foster home with other male dogs, he has come to an agreement with them; they leave him alone and he leaves them alone! Any dog that annoys him or tries to bully him will be shown out the door by Trevor!

All in all, Trevor is one character of a dog, affectionate, and a devoted family pet. We are seeking a new home for Trevor where he'll have plenty of space to run around and activity to keep him busy. He loves the farming life! Although his foster family truly love Trevor and think he is one fantastic dog, they had a meeting and came to a decision to let Trevor go to a new home only if it's a great home and that way they can continue fostering new doggies for DAR.

If you can give this great little fella a new home and family to call his own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

AGE: < 5 Years of Age
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Spaniel X Collie
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Timmy was originally found as a stray on 17 June 2013, Windmill Road, Drogheda Co Louth, however his owner was subsequently found and wished to surrender him for rehoming.

Timmy is fully vaccinated and neutered. He is a small to medium size dog who is very friendly and very active. He gets along well with children and other dogs; he isn't as good with cats, pheasants, ducks or any other feathery creatures.

Timmy will require an owner with previous dog experience and one who is willing to give this fella the amount of exercise and activity he needs. Timmy requires a secure garden and isn't suitable to be left on his own in the garden as he easily gets bored and will look elsewhere for entertainment. Timmy sometimes appears aloof and not overly affectionate, but he's one lovely little dog!

If you can provide Timmy with the type of home he needs, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire. Currently Timmy is in private boarding kennels and although he has a lot of playmates, he'd like a home and family to call his own.

DESCRIPTION:

Toby is being surrendered by his owners due to an extension of both their family and house leaving little time (and space) for Toby.

He is very active for his age. He's house trained but not great on the lead nor good off-lead. He gets on with other dogs, but definitely not cats. He's good with children and people in general. Toby spends his days both indoors and outdoors.

He is described as an inquisitive dog and playful dog. Gentle with children, but may appreciate a quieter household. Toby is a dog that needs to be exercised regularly to burn off his energy.

Meet Shanks. A very friendly, well behaved guy. And don't you think he is very handsome? He was surrendered due to personal circumstances of his owner. He lacks a bit of confidence but with a bit of help that will be sorted. He is good on the lead but can be a bit excited for the first few minutes. Shanks is very clever though and will pick up very quickly. He is a strong boy so an experienced dog person/family is what he needs. Also kids older than 10 years will suit him well.

AGE: 9.5yrs
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Lab x
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Sumo is a mature male mixed breed, probably Lab x, and he's looking for a new home. He was reluctantly surrendered by his owners because their young baby was allergic. Sumo is an ex-DAR dog, adopted as a puppy in November 2005. He is a family dog, friendly with adults and children (5yrs+ only) but hates cats, so no small furries please!

Sumo is a large, strong dog, active and in good health. He'll be 10 years old this summer. He is vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. He is house-trained, strong on the lead and good in the car. He sleeps inside and is used to being part of the family. He has always been an only dog so would probably prefer to continue this way although he might tolerate a female. All dogs are individuals and there's dogs they like and dogs they don't so it would very much depend on the dog in question. He needs a dog experienced owner and ideally a man as his main carer as that is what he was used to.

Sumo LOVES his food and will steal from the table or counter if the opportunity presents itself. He also LOVES company and really would prefer company for most of the day. And finally, he LOVES the ball and loves to have someone to play ball with him.

If you can offer handsome Sumo a new home, please complete our Rehoming Questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank you.

Sasha

AGE: 9 years old
SEX: Female (Neutered)
BREED: Terrier x
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

SASHA NEEDS A HOME AND SOMEONE TO LOVE

SASHA is a female Terrier x, medium size (12kg) and she is now 9 years old. She has plenty of energy, great temperament and loves company. She is active and loves her walks but couldn't go for miles (even though she'd want to!) due to an old leg injury from when she was a puppy. She is vaccinateded, neutered and microchipped. She was surrendered due to family commitments in Nov 2013 and went on trial to a new home but as the country property was not fully secure, Sasha started to wander and got picked up by the dog wardens and had to be liberated from Louth Pound. So a secure garden is essential!

Sasha is friendly and affectionate and has lived with another dog in her previous home, her trial home and with four dogs in a foster home, so the company of another dog would be good for her, ideally a male either her own size or bigger. Sasha is a bit afraid of strange dogs initially and can snarl if they are in her face but soon becomes friends. Despite being nine years old, she is still lively and excitable and will bark if she sees another dog while out for walks or travelling in the car. She is 100% house-trained and very much a house dog who just wants to be part of the family.

Sasha needs a country home with a secure garden, another dog for company, some home comforts and someone to love her. If you can offer Sasha a home like that, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank You.

Shadow

AGE: 2-3yrs old
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Husky/Malamute
LOCATION: In kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Shadow is a handsome young male Husky/Malamute and he is ready and waiting for the right home. He was found in October 2013 dodging traffic on the dual carriageway in Drogheda, Co. Louth. Despite best efforts to find his owner, none came forward.

Shadow is a large dog with a good temperament and like all Huskies or Malamutes, has a lot of energy and needs an active lifestyle and a VERY secure garden. He is fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. Shadow was born with a dodgy knee on his hind right leg and he had surgery to correct the problem in Spring 2015. He's recovered really well thanks to physiotherapy he's been receiving. He may not be the dog for you if you want him to go long distance running but walking, playing and normal activities pose no problems. Shadow is a bright, agile and active dog and he needs company for much of the day, a large secure property, ideally in the country as he loves the outdoors. Shadow can play a bit rough with other dogs so would be best as an only dog. He is currently in kennels but we know the right home is out there waiting for him somewhere.

If you have large dog experience and can offer a suitable permanent home to Shadow, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process.

AGE: ~ 1-3 Years
SEX: Male
BREED: Spaniel Cross Breed - Medium Size
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Scan was found running around Peter Street / Laurence Street in Drogheda Town Centre, Drogheda County Louth on Friday October 12th, 2013. A kind member of the public took him in for fear he would get hit by a car.

No one has come forward to reclaim Scan and now he's looking for a new home and family to call his own.

Scan has now been neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. He is a lovely dog and is well behaved in the house. Scan is a very active dog and loves to run around sniffing here, there and everywhere. He is strong on the lead so will need some lead training. He's good off the lead and will stay within eyesight and come back when called.

We suspect that Scan was a hunting dog at one time as he is alert and active. Scan isn't boisterous or destructive.

He seems to be fine around other dogs and will give chase to cats.

We hope to get some more photos of Scan to update his profile.
