DAR Dogs Needing Homes

Please browse through all of our available dogs. We do the best to match the known temperament, breed, age, and level of activity of our dogs to potential owners. Some dogs require more training than others; some would suit being rehomed as the only dog or would prefer canine companionship. If you have any additional queries on the dogs below, please contact us at info@dar.ie .

PLEASE NOTE: We do not have a facility for holding all of our dogs. They are kept in private boarding kennels, foster homes or still with their owners who are seeking to surrender them. ALL VIEWINGS are by APPOINTMENT ONLY.

All of our dogs are vaccinated, neutered (if older than 6 months), de-wormed & de-flea'd. All dogs receive a health check from local vets. Drogheda Animal Rescue will do its best to assess the character, temperament, and level of obedience of each dog before it is rehomed.

Drogheda Animal Rescue requests a donation when adopting a dog. All donations are used solely for the care of our animals and will help with the expense incurred by Drogheda Animal Rescue for veterinarian costs associated with vaccinations, neutering, worming & de-flea'ing.

The DONATION GUIDELINE below is the minimum amount that will cover our vaccination & neutering costs only. Please bear in mind that many of our dogs are kept in costly boarding kennels until homes can be found, and Drogheda Animal Rescue absorbs this cost.

  • Un-Vaccinated Puppies: €25.00
  • Vaccinated Dogs & Puppies: €65.00
  • Vaccinated & Neutered Dogs: €150
  • Microchipping: Free of Charge for all DAR Dogs

All potential owners must complete a rehoming questionnaire and all homes are vetted. Please see section on Adoption Process - Dogs for further details on our adoption policy.

Bandit

AGE: 3 years old
SEX: Male (neutered)
BREED: Black Lab/Boxer cross
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Bandit was found on the Beamore Rd, Drogheda on the 20st of September 2013. His owner never came forward and Bandit is looking for his forever home.

What can we say about Bandit except that he is a big, very friendly teddybear. He loves his cuddles and loves his cuddles. Bandit is good with other dogs, very good on the lead and very gentle. He loves to know and see everything, so maybe a room with a view?

Due to his size, kids older than 10 years will suit him fine and he loves company.

If you can offer Bandit his forever home, please fill in the online rehoming questionnaire and we will contact you to discuss in further detail.

Skye

More Photos
AGE: 2 years old
SEX: Female (neutered)
BREED: Collie/terrier cross
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Skye was found at the Valley Inn, Dunleer of the 24th of Nov 2013. Nobody came forward to claim her and she is now looking for a new home.

Skye is very friendly and very much indoors dog. She is only a medium sized (12kg) dog and loves attention. What happened to her before she came into our care, we will never know but she is a bit of a nervous dog. More so when you walk with her outside than indoors. Though she is only a medium size dog, she is very strong on the lead and is still learning how to walk on the lead. It will take her a bit of time to trust you, but when she does, you will have a new best friend.

Due to her nervousness a quiet enough home, maybe even with another calm confident dog and kids older than 10 years, will be perfect for her. She is a bit of a monkey and a full secure garden is a must.

The third picture of Skye is not the best but shows her size best.

If you want to offer Skye her forever home, please fill in the rehoming questionnaire and we will get back to you to discuss further.

AGE: 6 years old
SEX: Male (neutered)
BREED: Lab cross
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Meet Shanks. A very friendly, well behaved guy. And don't you think he is very handsome? He was surrendered due to personal circumstances of his owner. He lacks a bit of confidence but with a bit of help that will be sorted. He is good on the lead but can be a bit excited for the first few minutes. Shanks is very clever though and will pick up very quickly. He is a strong boy so an experienced dog person/family is what he needs. Also kids older than 10 years will suit him well.

If you can and want to offer Shanks his forever home, please fill in the rehoming questionnaire and we will be in touch to take it a step further.

Tess's Pups

AGE: DOB 23 Dec 2014
SEX: Male / Female
BREED: Terrier Crosses
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Tess was found on November 6th, 2014 at the Bus Eireann Depot on the Donore Road, Drogheda, Co Louth. We took her into foster care, but little did we know she was with pup! On Dec 23rd, she gave to eight healthy pups! She was in labour for about 6-hours and was exhausted after her ordeal, but remained a dedicated and caring mother.

The pups are now ready to be rehomed and have started their vaccinations and all have been microchipped. There are (5) boys and (3) girls. All are in foster care and have been well cared for and well socialised.

If you would like to give one of these little ones a new home, complete an online rehoming questionnaire. Please NOTE: We do not rehome puppies to households where the owners are at work all day nor do we rehome puppies to families with children 5 years of age or younger.

Little Jake

More Photos
AGE: 6 Years of Age
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Terrier
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Little Jake was surrendered by his owner to Drogheda Animal Rescue. He's had a string of owners and seems to have been taken in as a stray by each of his various owners, but we can't understand why as Little Jake is a great little terrier and just loves to be cuddled and fussed over! He loves nothing more than to sit on your lap and cosy up to you.

We think he was left alone in gardens that weren't secured so he set off to find something to do. All he wants is to have company and be cared for and that's not a lot to ask for as he's such an adorable and agreeable little fellow!

Little Jake would be best as the only dog in the household as he isn't particularly interested in playing with other dogs. He will give chase to cats when they are out in the garden, but seems to be OK with them in the house.

Jake is fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. He'd be ideal for an older person looking for the companionship of a little dog that doesn't need 2-hour walks a day or challenging agility courses to run through.

If you can offer this little gentleman of a terrier a new home and family to call his own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire. And did we mention that he's a cute as a button!

Stitchy

More Photos
AGE: ~ 2 Years of Age
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Deerhound X Lurcher
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Stitchy is Deerhound x Lurcher that was found in a bit of a state on Oct 17th, 2014. He wandered into the car park of Premier Periclase, in Drogheda, Co Louth with a tear to his side / groin area that required immediate veterinarian care. His skin / coat were also in poor condition. Stitchy has since been fully vaccinated, neutered, microhipped and is now back to health.

He's a large dog that's full of character. He loves nothing more than to sleep by the radiator or bask in the sunshine. He loves human contact and gets on well with the other dogs. He's great with children, good on recall when off the lead and walks well on the lead.

Stitchy loves to do a bit of gardening which may not be to everyone's liking; this is often referred to as digging! Typical of the breed, Stitchy is also known as a 'kitchen counter surfer'! So, leave nothing tasty on the counter or it will be gone before a blink of the eye! Other than that, Stitchy is a very likeable dog and agreeable dog.

If you can offer this grand fella a new home and family to call his own, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Marley

AGE: 1 Year of Age
SEX: Male
BREED: Golden Labrador
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Marley is being surrendered by his owner as the family is moving into accommodation that doesn't allow pets.

Marley is described as an energetic dog (we'd be surprised if he wasn't!) that gets on well with children, other dogs and cats. Marley is house trained and will be fully vaccinated and neutered before he is rehomed.

Like all young Labradors, he needs an active life style and regular interaction with people.

If you can offer a home to Marley, complete an online rehoming questionnaire. We're hoping to get more photos of Marley if he'd just hold still for one minute!

DESCRIPTION:

Ruben is a young Shih Tzu looking for a new home and family. He has a lot of good qualities so we hope we can find the ideal home for this little fella!

Ruben is neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. He's house trained, lead trained, good with other dogs and good with children. We're not sure about cats so we'll just say that Ruben isn't good around them.

Ruben is still a young active lad, so well need his daily exercise besides lounging inside the house.

If you can offer Ruben a good home, complete our online rehoming questionnaire. Ruben and I will be going through them with a fine tooth comb as he wants to have a say in his new home too!

Junior

More Photos
AGE: 11-12 months old
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: English Pointer
LOCATION: Fostered
DESCRIPTION:

Junior is a lovely, friendly, 11-12 month, male English Pointer who just wants a family and place to call his own. He hasn't had the best start in life as it was witnessed that he was thrown out of a car in June 2014. As a result of this, he stays close when out walking and would need someone at home for a good part of the day.

He loves the company of dogs and ideally a home with another dog would be great for him as he loves to play. Junior is good with people and would need a home with older children as he can be a bit bouncy at times. He pulls when first on-lead but then quietens down. His recall when off-lead is excellent.

Junior was underweight and scrawny when found but after a few months in DAR's care, he is now a good weight, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and ready both physically and emotionally for a new home.

If you can offer a suitable home to Junior, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process.

Brillo

More Photos
AGE: 1-2 years old
SEX: Female (Neutered)
BREED: Patterdale Terrier x
LOCATION: Found @ Scholes Lane, Drogheda
DESCRIPTION:

Brillo is a lovely young female wire-haired Terrier, possibly a Patterdale x, and she is ready for a new home. She was originally found in mid-April 2014 in Drogheda but no owners were found. She went to a new home on trial in the country, a farm, but being a true terrier, ended up killing some chickens! She is currently in foster care and waiting for a second chance.

Brillo is small, about 7kg, sweet, affectionate but timid in new situations and is not used to being walked on a lead or in busy areas with traffic. She is very good in the house, loves her toys and is a happy girl who loves her comfort! She is best as an only dog as she is not good with small dogs and is afraid of big dogs!

An ideal home for Brillo would be in a quiet area with a large secure garden, no other pets and with someone who wants a loving little companion. If that sounds like a match with you, please complete our online rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process.

Mo

More Photos
AGE: DOB Oct 28th, 2013
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: Mixed Breed
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Mo is looking for another new home. She didn't work out with her last adoptive family as she doesn't like to be left on her own during the day so we are looking for a family that will have a lot of time to give to the lovely Mo. She has loads of very good qualities that shouldn't be dismissed. Mo is a very affectionate girl that loves her cuddles and having her shoulders rubbed. She loves being in the company of people and although she is good around children, she can be a bit giddy so may not be suitable around young children.

She is best walked on a harness and can get a bit excited when she spots another dog when out walking, but she is good around other dogs. She knows basic commands but will need a bit more training and is eager to learn.

Mo has been neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. She is medium in size.

If you can give Mo a new home and family and promise not to give up on her, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Sumo

More Photos
AGE: 9.5yrs
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Lab x
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Sumo is a mature male mixed breed, probably Lab x, and he's looking for a new home. He was reluctantly surrendered by his owners because their young baby was allergic. Sumo is an ex-DAR dog, adopted as a puppy in November 2005. He is a family dog, friendly with adults and children but hates cats, so no small furries please!

Sumo is a large dog, active and in good health. He'll be 10 years old this summer. He is vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. He is house-trained, good on the lead and good in the car. He sleeps inside and is used to being part of the family. Although always an only dog, he is fine with most other dogs and should be fine living with another dog, preferably female.

He is described by his owners as a wonderful dog, playful and passive and were very sorry to have to let him go. If you can offer handsome Sumo a new home, please complete our Rehoming Questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank you.

Coyote Joe

More Photos
AGE: < 3 Years of Age
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: 100% Terrier
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Coyote Joe was found as a stray by a member of the public while out walking her dogs on January 23rd, 2014 in Newgrange Co Meath. It is suspected that poor Coyote Joe was abandoned as was in the same spot the next day when the same woman walked by again, but this time she knew something wasn't right and took him into her care.

Coyote Joe has since been fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. We've come to learn a lot about this little fellow and hope to find him a home with a true terrier lover!

He's not too bad around other dogs, but ideally a home with a female dog would be better as he has a streak of jealousy with other male dogs especially big dogs and will challenge them to the risk of his own health and safety! Coyote Joe doesn't like cats, ducks or chickens and we should probably add rabbits and anything small in general that's furry or with feathers!

But underneath the duck killing nature of Coyote Joe, is a very affectionate little dog. He will gain your affection and steal your heart. He's generally quiet at night when he settles in and not too bad with the toilet training although new places will cause him a bit of stress and anxiety, but once he has settled in, he's a fine little fellow.

If you can offer Coyote Joe a new home to call his own, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

P.S. Coyote Joe is somewhat camera shy so we hope to get new photos.

Sasha

More Photos
AGE: 7 years old
SEX: Female (Neutered)
BREED: Terrier x
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

SASHA is a female Terrier x, medium size (12.4kg) and she is 7 years old. She has plenty of energy, great temperament and loves company. She is active and loves her walks but couldn't go for miles (even though she'd want to!) due to an old leg injury from when she was a puppy. She is vaxed, neutered and microchipped. She was surrendered due to family commitments in Nov 2013 and was on trial in new home but as the country property was not fully secure she had started to wander and ended up in Louth Dog Pound. So a secure garden is essential.

Sasha is friendly and affectionate and has lived with another dog in her previous home and her trial home and with four dogs in her current foster home, so the company of another dog would be good for her, ideally a male either her own size or bigger. Sasha is a bit afraid of other dogs initially and can snarl if they are in her face but soon becomes friends. She is 100% house-trained and very much a house dog who just wants to be part of the family. If you can offer Sasha a home, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank You.

Holly

More Photos
AGE: 4 Years of Age
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: Boxer Cross Breed
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Holly is being surrendered by her owner and we hope we can find this lovely girl and new home and family.

Holly is medium / large in size, is neutered and fully vaccinated. She gets along great with children and is well behaved in the house. She is house trained and travels well in the car. Holly is an inside / outside dog and is used to be being very much a part of the family.

Holly is an alpha dog and will get on with some dogs, but not all dogs. Cats are definitely a NO NO and we don't think that Holly will ever make friends with them. Holly is very strong on the lead and will need an experienced dog handler. She doesn't always come back immediately upon recall when off the lead, but will eventually return.

If you are interested in giving Holly a new home and another chance, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Teddy

AGE: 2 Years of Age

BREED: Akita X German Shepherd
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

TEDDY is a female Akita or possibly Akita/German Shepherd crossbreed. She's approx. two years old, fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. She's sociable with other dogs but would be best with a big playmate who can keep up with her energy. Cats and other small furries are a no-no. She loves the outdoors and is not a barker - it's an Akita thing - and she is a confident and loyal dog. Due to her size and breed, Teddy will need an experienced owner who has large dog or ideally Akita experience. She would suit a household with children over 12 years of age. A country home would be best for Teddy where she can have lots of outdoor space and company.

If you are interested in giving Teddy girl a new home, please complete our rehoming questionnaire. Thank you.

Scooby

BREED: Wire Hair Terrier
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Scooby is being surrendered by his elderly owner who has arthritis making it difficult to walk and care for Scooby. Therefore, Scooby isn't getting the exercise and attention he needs and indeed it's driving him batty!

Scooby spends most of his time outside. He does need work with lead training and needs to get neutered before being rehomed. He has loads of energy but once he's given ample exercise, he'll quietly lie on your lap. Scooby is an affection dog that deserves another chance.

He doesn't get on with other dogs and cats are out of the question! He is probably too giddy and excitable for children under 12 years of age.

If you can help Scooby find a new home and family, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Buster

AGE: 11 years old
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Collie x
LOCATION: Fostered
DESCRIPTION:

Buster is a mature male Collie x and he needs a new home. He was originally found as a stray along with his son Bubba (see separate entry) and although their owner was found, unfortunately he did not want them back as he was no longer in a position to care for them. Buster is currently in kennels. He is fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped.

Buster needs a home where he can have human company and plenty of attention and cuddles. He is still very active and loves his walks. He had a full top to toe health check recently while in the vets for neutering and passed with flying colours. There's plenty of life in the old boy yet! Buster was mainly an outdoor dog in his previous home but has really taken to his home comforts and deserves nothing less in his twilight years.

Buster has had a tough break being surrendered at this stage of his life so we are hoping to find him the home he deserves with someone who will love him and give him the time and attention he needs. If you think that might be you, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process.

AGE: 18 months approx.
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Husky/Malamute
LOCATION: In kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Shadow is a handsome young male Husky/Malamute and he is ready and waiting for the right home. He was found in October 2013 dodging traffic on the dual carriageway in Drogheda, Co. Louth. Despite best efforts to find his owner, none came forward.

Shadow is a large dog with a good temperament and like all Huskies or Malamutes, has a lot of energy and needs an active lifestyle and a VERY secure garden. He is fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. Shadow was born with a dodgy knee on his hind right leg but it causes him no problems. He may not be the dog for you if you want him to go long distance running but walking, playing and normal activities pose no problems. Shadow is a bright, agile and active dog and he needs company for most of the day, a large secure property (ideally in the country as he loves the outdoors) and another dog for company - preferably female. He is currently in kennels but we know the right home is out there waiting for him somewhere.

BREED: Spaniel Cross Breed
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Timmy was originally found as a stray on 17 June 2013, Windmill Road, Drogheda Co Louth, however his owner was subsequently found and wished to surrender him for rehoming.

Timmy is fully vaccinated and neutered. He is a small to medium size dog who is very friendly and very active. He gets along well with children and other dogs; he isn't as good with cats.

Timmy will require an owner with previous dog experience and one who is willing to give this young boy the amount of exercise and activity he needs. Timmy requires a secure garden and isn't suitable to be left on his own in the garden as he easily gets bored and will look elsewhere for entertainment.

If you can provide Timmy with the type of home he needs, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire. Currently Timmy is in private boarding kennels and although he has a lot of playmates, he'd like a home and family to call his own.

Molly

More Photos
AGE: < 5 Years Old
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: Terrier
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Molly was surrendered by her owner due to no fault of her own and was at RISK to being sent to the pound, so we quickly took Molly into foster care.

Little Molly has had a chequered life and was originally found as a stray dog living rough in Collon Co Louth. She was picked up by the dog wardens and thrown into jail, but was released to a caring woman who was familiar with Molly. But unfortunately the man of the house wasn't keen on Molly nor was Molly keen on him and she was under threat of being sent to the pound and that's where we stepped in.

Molly is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. She's a well behaved dog and is good on and off the lead. She doesn't like the loud noises of tractors and trucks. She's a bit on the nervous side, so we are seeking a home without young children. She is good around other dogs and hasn't been tried and tested around cats.

Molly is very much a woman's dog and wants to bond to someone. She needs lots of TLC and reassurance that she won't be abandoned, so will need a home where there is someone home more often than not to give her comfort and security.

If you can give this Molly a new home to call her own, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

AGE: ~ 1-3 Years
SEX: Male
BREED: Spaniel Cross Breed - Medium Size
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Scan was found running around Peter Street / Laurence Street in Drogheda Town Centre, Drogheda County Louth on Friday October 12th, 2013. A kind member of the public took him in for fear he would get hit by a car.

No one has come forward to reclaim Scan and now he's looking for a new home and family to call his own.

Scan has now been neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. He is a lovely dog and is well behaved in the house. Scan is a very active dog and loves to run around sniffing here, there and everywhere. He is strong on the lead so will need some lead training. He's good off the lead and will stay within eyesight and come back when called.

We suspect that Scan was a hunting dog at one time as he is alert and active. Scan isn't boisterous or destructive.

He seems to be fine around other dogs and will give chase to cats.

We hope to get some more photos of Scan to update his profile.

If you can give this wonderful fellow a new home to call his own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Mylo

AGE: 3 Years of Age
SEX: Male
BREED: Dalmatian
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Mylo was reluctantly surrendered by his owner due to relocation to New Zealand for work. We hope to find this handsome boy a new home and family.

Mylo is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. He was originally acquired by his owner from a breeder as a pup. Mylo is a typical energetic Dalmatian that will need someone who is willing to give him the exercise and time he needs. Mylo is very strong on the lead and will need some basic training, but on the plus side, Mylo listens and responds well to training. He isn't aggressive with either people or other dogs, but Mylo hasn't learned how to greet other dogs politely so he usually approaches them full of energy and bounce, which may be a bit off putting to both the dogs and their owners.

Mylo shows a lot of promise in the right hands of someone who is familiar with the Dalmatian temperament and will to give them the time. Oh, and did we say that Mylo is a very handsome boy?

If you can give Mylo the home he needs, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Helmet is being reluctantly surrendered by her owners and we are seeking a home with an experienced dog owner and a household with children over 12 years of age.

She is neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped, toilet trained, lead trained, doesn't chew or bark excessively. She gets on with some dogs and definitely not cats! She is good on recall and loves her exercise!

Helmet is a bit wary of strangers and doesn't like to be fussed over or petted excessively. She would be best rehomed to someone who is experienced with Cocker Spaniels.
