DAR Dogs Needing Homes

Please browse through all of our available dogs. We do the best to match the known temperament, breed, age, and level of activity of our dogs to potential owners. Some dogs require more training than others; some would suit being rehomed as the only dog or would prefer canine companionship. If you have any additional queries on the dogs below, please contact us at info@dar.ie .

PLEASE NOTE: We do not have a facility for holding all of our dogs. They are kept in private boarding kennels, foster homes or still with their owners who are seeking to surrender them. ALL VIEWINGS are by APPOINTMENT ONLY.

All of our dogs are vaccinated, neutered (if older than 6 months), de-wormed & de-flea'd. All dogs receive a health check from local vets. Drogheda Animal Rescue will do its best to assess the character, temperament, and level of obedience of each dog before it is rehomed.

Drogheda Animal Rescue requests a donation when adopting a dog. All donations are used solely for the care of our animals and will help with the expense incurred by Drogheda Animal Rescue for veterinarian costs associated with vaccinations, neutering, worming & de-flea'ing.

The DONATION GUIDELINE below is the minimum amount that will cover our vaccination & neutering costs only. Please bear in mind that many of our dogs are kept in costly boarding kennels until homes can be found, and Drogheda Animal Rescue absorbs this cost.

  • Vaccinated Dogs & Puppies: €65.00
  • Vaccinated & Neutered Dogs: €150
  • Microchipping: Free of Charge for all DAR Dogs

All potential owners must complete a rehoming questionnaire and all homes are vetted. Please see section on Adoption Process - Dogs for further details on our adoption policy.

Hooch

More Photos
AGE: 6 Years of Age
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Beagle
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

This is Hooch, a 6-year old Beagle. His owners wish to rehome him due to a recent move to a new house without much of a garden for Hooch. A new baby into the family means that his owners have less time to devote to Hooch and feel he would be better in a new situation.

Hooch is a typical Beagle; high energy and loves his daily exercise. He spends his time between indoors and outdoors and is house trained. He is good on the lead and good upon recall while off the lead. He doesn't bark or chew excessively, nor is he aggressive or boisterous when meeting other dogs or visitors to the house. However, Hooch does not like cats!

Hooch would best be rehomed to an active household with children 12+ years of age.

If you can offer Hooch a second chance, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Hooch is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped.

Nina

More Photos
AGE: DOB Oct 01st, 2012 (est)
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: Shih Tzu X Terrier
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Nina was reluctantly surrendered by her owner due to no fault of her own. She was originally found as a stray puppy in Clogherhead, Co Louth in December 2012 and was adopted. However, she now finds herself needing a new home again and we hope to find her one.

Nina is a lovely, medium size dog. She looks like a Shih Tzu crossed with a terrier as there are similar traits of each breed. She is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped.

She is a quiet dog, very friendly and affectionate. She is indeed a sensitive soul as she refused to eat for about one week after her last owner surrendered her, but she's now eating without problems. Nina is good with other dogs, hasn't been tried and tested on cats, and is in general good with people and children. She isn't destructive and travels well in the car.

Her skin is very sensitive and she is to be walked with a harness. Nina doesn't like the rain and will refuse to go outside to do her toilet business if it's raining.

We think Nina will make someone a great little dog and we hope to find her the right home where she will be well looked after, cared for and loved.

If you are interested in giving Nina the home she deserves, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Bobby

More Photos
AGE: 1.5 Years of Age
SEX: Male
BREED: Retriever X Collie
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Bobby is being surrendered due to a leg injury incurred by his owner which means that Bobby isn't walked or exercised. His current living conditions are not suitable or sustainable for a dog and we are hoping to find him a new home ASAP.

Bobby is of good temperament and spends much of his time outside. He is lead trained but as he is kept outside all the time, he hasn't been house trained. He is good in the car when travelling, good with other dogs and his behaviour around cats is unknown. Bobby gets on well with children, however it is our policy to rehome dogs to families with children who are over 5-years of age.

Bobby isn't aggressive, boisterous or destructive. He is a large, active dog and we hope to find him a home where he will be part of the family and loved.

If you are interested in rehoming Bobby, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Molly

More Photos
AGE: Born Sept 2014
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: Red Setter X
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Molly was surrendered by her owner because she was simply unwanted. Marital and domestic problems meant Molly was destined for the pound, but fortunately, concerned folk were able to intervene while her owner was on the way with Molly to one of the country's high-kill rate pounds and he agreed to turn around and surrender her to our rescue.

Molly's life was less than ideal for any dog and fortunately she still is trusting and affectionate towards humans. She is now in foster care and getting the opportunity to experience a life of running along the beach, playing in the water, and exploring the countryside with her foster family and new canine friends. She is being taught some of the basic commands and learning to walk on the lead. She is very strong on the lead and is currently being trained with a Halti head harness. Her recall while off lead is getting better daily.

Molly is a high energy dog. She looks like a cross between a Red Setter and perhaps a Spaniel, but is a medium size dog. She's neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped.

Molly is fine around cats and has lived with children. She is a good traveller in the car and sits quietly. She is house-trained, and generally quiet, but a lively girl who needs daily exercise.

If you are interested in adopting Molly, complete an online rehomining questionnaire. She's a beautiful dog that deserves a family and home that will keep her safe and show her kindness, love, and affection.

Belle

More Photos
AGE: 4-5 Years of Age
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: German Shepherd
LOCATION: In Foster Care - Surrender
DESCRIPTION:

Belle is a typical German Shepherd and will make someone a loyal and devoted companion. Belle is a pure breed GSD and is very well behaved. She is clean in house, quiet, and very affectionate. She listens well and is very obedient. Belle is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped.

Belle would be best as the only dog in the household but is currently in foster care with four male dogs. She can get along with other dogs, but not females. She can be a bit of a bully at times around other dogs and can get jealous when other dogs are around her master or mistress. If she was paired with another dog, ideally it would need to be a dog that isn't going to challenge or bully her. She can be quite playful with young dogs. Belle hasn't shown any signs of food aggression.

Belle travels well in the car and loves going places. She doesn't tend to want run away or stray. She's very strong on the lead and can get quite protective or boisterous when on the lead around with other dogs.

Like many Shepherds, Belle is very sensitive and a bit of a baby if she is touched unexpectedly so we suspect somewhere during her life, she wasn't treated very well.

We hope to find this fantastic dog a home where she will settle in and live out her life. Ideally, she would like a home where she can go for long walks and explore, but have the comforts of a warm and cozy house. Belle is very good inside the house and sleeps quietly throughout the night. We don't know how Belle is around young children, so a home with children over the age of 12-years of age would be best. And no cats! Belle would be suit someone with previous German Shepherd experience.

If you would like to adopt the beautiful Belle, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Trixie

More Photos
AGE: ~ 2 Years of Age
SEX: Female - Neutered
BREED: Terrier X Beagle
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Little Trixie was found in Millmount Abbey Estates, Co Meath on August 26th, 2015. She literally ran into someone's house. With a bit of investigative work, we found out Trixie's origins and indeed her story is a sad one.

Trixie was originally rehomed from another rescue to an elderly man in July 2015. Trixie became too possessive and protective of the man especially around his young grandchild, so Trixie was duly packed into the car and returned to the rescue. However, she never made it back into the rescue as the man gave her to three men in a van who were looking for a hunting terrier. How Trixie escaped and ended up in Millmount Abbey is a mystery, but little did we know that she was pregnant when found in August and tragically, Trixie lost her one and only pup, as it was born dead.

It was then discovered that Trixie had a luxating patella (knee cap that was slipping out of place) so she had surgery to repair her knee as it would cause problems in the future. It took awhile for Trixie to recover from her ordeal, both the loss of her pup and knee operation, but with the help of a loving and patient foster family, Trixie is now in flying form. She has since been neutered and fully vaccinated; she is also microchipped.

Trixie is a great little dog and has been passed from pillar to post, so we are looking for a forever home for this fantastic little dog packed with personality. However, she has a few issues that can be tackled easily for the experienced dog owner.

Trixie needs to be the only dog in the home as she is extremely jealous and possessive. She does get on with other dogs, but seems to have a particular fear and issue with large dogs, but she is fine when meeting dogs when out for walks. Trixie doesn't like cats and she doesn't like toddlers. We don't know why, but she just doesn't like young children. So, children in any home must be 12+years of age. Trixie does have separation anxiety and will cry and howl when left on her own especially at night, but her foster family have found that this is only short lived and Trixie will calm down. All she really wants is to be loved and given the chance, she'll sneak into her master's bed.

We feel that Trixie's issues are over-shadowed by the fact that she is just one tremendous little dog that is packed with personality. If you can offer Trixie a home to call her own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Sadie's Pups

More Photos
AGE: DOB November 29th, 2015
SEX: Male and Female
BREED: German Shepherd Cross Breed
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

SADIE AND HER PUPS - On November 11th, 2015, a young female German Shepherd was found tied with a rope to the railings on the South Quay in Drogheda, Co Louth. A passer-by noticed that she had been there several hours and with no owner in sight, he took her to the local vet. She wasn't microchipped nor was she wearing a collar. She was, however, heavily pregnant. She was taken into the care of DAR and was named Sadie by her foster family.

On November 29th, 2015, Sadie gave birth to 12-puppies; only eight survived. Sadie has been an excellent new mum and is very protective and caring of her little family. There are 4-males and 4-females and all are thriving; getting bigger by the day! We do not know the breed of the father, but these pups will be large when fully grown. They will be available for adoption when they are 10-weeks of age. They will be fully vaccinated and microchipped. All pups have been on a worming programme since 2-weeks of age and have been very well socialised with both people and other dogs.

If you are interested in giving one of these pups a home to call their own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Please NOTE: DAR does not rehome pups to families with young children under the age of 5-years nor to homes where the owners are working full-time and out of the house more often than not. They are very cute and cuddly now, but will be LARGE when fully grown.

Rio

More Photos
AGE: 8 years old
SEX: Male
BREED: Cocker Spaniel
LOCATION: Surrender by Owner
DESCRIPTION:

Rio is a male Cocker Spaniel, 8 years old and he is looking for new home where he can have company for most of the day. He has always been an only dog but is fine with other dogs he meets on walks, so might be fine living with another dog, especially a female. He has no experience of cats. Rio is a house dog and must be part of the family. Like all Cocker Spaniels, he is active and energetic so a secure garden and daily walks are a must.

Rio is a friendly dog, good with adults and would be best with older children. He is being surrendered because his owner now lives in an apartment which is not suitable for Rio. He is vaccinated and microchipped and will be neutered before his adoption is completed.

If you can give the handsome Rio a suitable permanent home, please complete the rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank you.

Holly

More Photos
AGE: 4 years old
SEX: Female (Neutered)
BREED: Cavalier
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Holly is a lovely female Cavalier that was surrendered to DAR in October 2015 because of her owner's health issues. She went into heat shortly after coming into DAR's care, so couldn't be neutered until mid-December. She's now neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and ready to start on the next chapter in her life. She is currently in foster care with several other Cavaliers, a Jack Russell and two cats. Holly is a very sweet dog, very affectionate and would love a home where she could be an only dog and the centre of attention. She doesn't mind cats, so a cat in her new home would be fine.

Holly loves kids (over 5yrs only please) so would make a great family pet. Like all Cavaliers, Holly has a heart murmur but is on the lower end of the scale so not an issue re living a normal life. She also seems a bit hard of hearing but again this does not pose any problems in her enjoyment of life. Cavaliers are very much house dogs and Holly is looking for a loving home where she can live as part of the family.

If you can offer a suitable home to Holly, please complete a rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process.

Benny

More Photos
AGE: 1 year old approx
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Terrier x
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Benny is a small-medium, timid, male Jack Russell x Staffie/Pointer, about a year old who for the past two months has been learning that it is normal dog behaviour to go for a walk on a lead and to sleep indoors. He had a rough start before DAR came to his rescue and is frightened of most things as he never encountered things other dogs living indoors or going for a walk experience daily. However despite it all, Benny is a gentle, friendly little fellow who wants desperately to please and fit in and in two months he is almost there. Benny is great with people, children and other dogs and his new home MUST have another resident DOG as he feels secure when they are there. He grew up with another dog and Benny was shattered when his previous owners rehomed his buddy. In his fosterer's home, there are three dogs and Benny is particularly attached to a female of similar size to himself. We're not sure how he is with cats but his breed might suggest he mightn't be compatible with them even though he is timid. Benny is still being walked on the lead as noises or distractions while walking might make him fearful and bolt but he is getting better every day and very friendly with every dog and person he meets. His fosterer hopes to try him off lead soon. Benny is vaccinated, microchipped, neutered, and patiently waiting for his forever home with a friendly doggie buddy. If you can offer a suitable home to Benny, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank you.

Hope

AGE: DOB March 01st, 2014
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Labrador X Breed
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Hope is an ex-Service Dog Europe dog and was rescued by a former SDE worker who had to leave Ireland, so we were asked to take Hope into our care.

Hope is fully vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered. He's a large dog, lively, giddy and in dire need of one-to-one care and training. He has a sweet personality, travels well in the car, and loves other dogs. He's not overly keen on cats though. Hope is very strong on the lead and needs training.

If you can give this fellow a chance at a life with a family of his own, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire. Hope has spent much of his life in kennels and we would really love to see him settled into a home with a nice warm, comfy bed that he's never had.

Trevor

More Photos
AGE: < 5 Years of Age
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Brittany Spaniel
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Trevor was found in Donore, Co Meath on Sunday, March 29th, 2015. He wandered into a woman's garden where he remained until a DAR volunteer came out to collect him the next day. He was extremely thin with his ribs and bones sticking out, and had a deep gash on his leg. No one has come to reclaim Trevor, so now he's looking for a new home of his own.

It took some time to get Trevor back to health and he is now fully fit, neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Trevor is in foster care with a farming family, many other dogs, cats, and children. He loves the busy farming life and simply loves being outside where he can see everything that's going on, and roll around in the muck and mud to his heart's content! Trevor doesn't like to be locked in and actually likes to sleep outside. He also loves swimming in the sea and loves his bubble baths when he gets too mucky.

He has shown to be a loyal dog that won't stray and sticks close to home and his pack. He doesn't have any road sense though so a secure garden is a must! Trevor gets on with most dogs, but prefers female dogs. Although Trevor is in a foster home with other male dogs, he has come to an agreement with them; they leave him alone and he leaves them alone! Any dog that annoys him or tries to bully him will be shown out the door by Trevor!

All in all, Trevor is one character of a dog, affectionate, and a devoted family pet. We are seeking a new home for Trevor where he'll have plenty of space to run around and activity to keep him busy. He loves the farming life! Although his foster family truly love Trevor and think he is one fantastic dog, they had a meeting and came to a decision to let Trevor go to a new home only if it's a great home and that way they can continue fostering new doggies for DAR.

If you can give this great little fella a new home and family to call his own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Timmy

AGE: < 5 Years of Age
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Spaniel X Collie
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Timmy was originally found as a stray on 17 June 2013, Windmill Road, Drogheda Co Louth, however his owner was subsequently found and wished to surrender him for rehoming.

Timmy is fully vaccinated and neutered. He is a small to medium size dog who is very friendly and very active. He gets along well with children and other dogs; he isn't as good with cats, pheasants, ducks or any other feathery creatures.

Timmy will require an owner with previous dog experience and one who is willing to give this fella the amount of exercise and activity he needs. Timmy requires a secure garden and isn't suitable to be left on his own in the garden as he easily gets bored and will look elsewhere for entertainment. Timmy sometimes appears aloof and not overly affectionate, but he's one lovely little dog!

If you can provide Timmy with the type of home he needs, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire. Currently Timmy is in private boarding kennels and although he has a lot of playmates, he'd like a home and family to call his own.

Mylo

AGE: DOB September 17th, 2010
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Dalmatian
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Mylo was reluctantly surrendered by his owner due to relocation to New Zealand for work in September 2013 and this poor boy has been with us now for over 2-years and is still without a home. We really hope to find this handsome dog a home and family to call his own. Mylo has mellowed since being in our care and our hearts go out to him as we cannot understand why he is still without a home.

Mylo is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. He was originally acquired by his owner from a breeder as a pup. Mylo is a typical energetic Dalmatian that will need someone who is willing to give him the exercise and time he needs. Mylo is very strong on the lead and will need some basic training, but on the plus side, Mylo listens and responds well. He isn't aggressive with either people or other dogs, but Mylo hasn't learned how to greet other dogs politely so he usually approaches them full of energy and bounce, which may be a bit off putting to both the dogs and their owners.

Mylo shows a lot of promise in the right hands of someone who is familiar with the Dalmatian temperament. Oh, and did we say that Mylo is a very handsome boy?

If you can give Mylo the home he needs, please complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

Shima

More Photos
AGE: < 2 Years of Age
SEX: Male - Neutered
BREED: Collie X Spaniel
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Shima was found on February 25th, 2015 by a member of the public in Drogheda, Co Louth. He had been hit by a car one night and was immediately taken to the local vet. Shima had suffered a fractured hind leg requiring extensive surgery. Although Shima's owners were found, they were unable to afford the estimated cost of Shima's surgery and post operative care and agreed to surrender Shima to DAR on the understanding that they had a least 2-months to save up for his surgery costs while Shima was in recovery.

However, when Shima was finally ready to go home in May 2015, his owners claimed they had no money and didn't bother to contact DAR again leaving DAR with a substantial bill of €1100 so we are now looking for a new home for Shima.

So, Shima went into a new foster home while a permanent home was being sought for him. Unfortunately, in Nov 2015, he was kicked by a horse and sustained a badly broken femur requiring more extensive surgery. Shima has recovered fairly well and is in an excellent foster home where he is being well looked after and being slowly introduced to walking on his leg again. This surgery set DAR back of around €700+.

But, we feel that Shima is such a fantastic little dog, that he deserves a chance. Shima is about 2-years old, fully vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. He is a very playful and active dog so will require a home where he is given the opportunity to exercise and explore. He's a very affectionate dog and is house trained. Still work to do on lead training and he's dreadful on recall when off the lead, but he has a heart of gold - our little Shima!

Ideally, Shima would like a home with children to play with him, preferably 10+ years of age. He is fine around other dogs, but can get a bit jealous if he's not getting all the attention, but in general, he's not aggressive towards other dogs.

If you can offer this little fella a home and family to FINALLY call his own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.

AGE: 9.5yrs
SEX: Male (Neutered)
BREED: Lab x
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Sumo is a mature male mixed breed, probably Lab x, and he's looking for a new home. He was reluctantly surrendered by his owners because their young baby was allergic. Sumo is an ex-DAR dog, adopted as a puppy in November 2005. He is a family dog, friendly with adults and children (5yrs+ only) but hates cats, so no small furries please!

Sumo is a large, strong dog, active and in good health. He'll be 10 years old this summer. He is vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. He is house-trained, strong on the lead and good in the car. He sleeps inside and is used to being part of the family. He has always been an only dog so would probably prefer to continue this way although he might tolerate a female. All dogs are individuals and there's dogs they like and dogs they don't so it would very much depend on the dog in question. He needs a dog experienced owner and ideally a man as his main carer as that is what he was used to.

Sumo LOVES his food and will steal from the table or counter if the opportunity presents itself. He also LOVES company and really would prefer company for most of the day. And finally, he LOVES the ball and loves to have someone to play ball with him.

If you can offer handsome Sumo a new home, please complete our Rehoming Questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank you.

Sasha

AGE: 9 years old

BREED: Terrier x
LOCATION: In Kennels
DESCRIPTION:

SASHA NEEDS A HOME AND SOMEONE TO LOVE

SASHA is a female Terrier x, medium size (12kg) and she is now 9 years old. She has plenty of energy, great temperament and loves company. She is active and loves her walks but couldn't go for miles (even though she'd want to!) due to an old leg injury from when she was a puppy. She is vaccinateded, neutered and microchipped. She was surrendered due to family commitments in Nov 2013 and went on trial to a new home but as the country property was not fully secure, Sasha started to wander and got picked up by the dog wardens and had to be liberated from Louth Pound. So a secure garden is essential!

Sasha is friendly and affectionate and has lived with another dog in her previous home, her trial home and with four dogs in a foster home, so the company of another dog would be good for her, ideally a male either her own size or bigger. Sasha is a bit afraid of strange dogs initially and can snarl if they are in her face but soon becomes friends. Despite being nine years old, she is still lively and excitable and will bark if she sees another dog while out for walks or travelling in the car. She is 100% house-trained and very much a house dog who just wants to be part of the family.

Sasha needs a country home with a secure garden, another dog for company, some home comforts and someone to love her. If you can offer Sasha a home like that, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process. Thank You.

LOCATION: In kennels
DESCRIPTION:

Shadow is a handsome young male Husky/Malamute and he is ready and waiting for the right home. He was found in October 2013 dodging traffic on the dual carriageway in Drogheda, Co. Louth. Despite best efforts to find his owner, none came forward.

Shadow is a large dog with a good temperament and like all Huskies or Malamutes, has a lot of energy and needs an active lifestyle and a VERY secure garden. He is fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. Shadow was born with a dodgy knee on his hind right leg and he had surgery to correct the problem in Spring 2015. He's recovered really well thanks to physiotherapy he's been receiving. He may not be the dog for you if you want him to go long distance running but walking, playing and normal activities pose no problems. Shadow is a bright, agile and active dog and he needs company for much of the day, a large secure property, ideally in the country as he loves the outdoors. Shadow can play a bit rough with other dogs so would be best as an only dog. He is currently in kennels but we know the right home is out there waiting for him somewhere.

If you have large dog experience and can offer a suitable permanent home to Shadow, please complete our rehoming questionnaire which is the first step in our rehoming process.

AGE: ~ 1-3 Years
SEX: Male
BREED: Spaniel Cross Breed - Medium Size
LOCATION: In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:

Scan was found running around Peter Street / Laurence Street in Drogheda Town Centre, Drogheda County Louth on Friday October 12th, 2013. A kind member of the public took him in for fear he would get hit by a car.

No one has come forward to reclaim Scan and now he's looking for a new home and family to call his own.

Scan has now been neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. He is a lovely dog and is well behaved in the house. Scan is a very active dog and loves to run around sniffing here, there and everywhere. He is strong on the lead so will need some lead training. He's good off the lead and will stay within eyesight and come back when called.

We suspect that Scan was a hunting dog at one time as he is alert and active. Scan isn't boisterous or destructive.

He seems to be fine around other dogs and will give chase to cats.

We hope to get some more photos of Scan to update his profile.

If you can give this wonderful fellow a new home to call his own, complete an online rehoming questionnaire.
