Fostering for DAR
Foster homes urgently needed for dogs & cats! Can you offer temporary foster care? Being a foster parent is one of the most rewarding jobs you can do. Our ability to house & care for animals in Drogheda Animal Rescue is very limited as we currently do not have a centre and rely heavily on foster care and costly private boarding kennels. We need to get the animals into safe, warm homes until we can find them a new permanent home. DAR will provide the following, so there’s no expense to you, all you have to do is give as much love and attention to your new furry friend as you can:
-
Bedding
-
Food & Food Bowls
-
Collar & Lead
-
Cat Litter & Tray
-
Outdoor Kennel if needed, and
-
One Happy Dog or Cat!
Our more experienced dog/cat handlers are always on hand to answer any questions or help out if there are any problems while our animals are in your foster care.
Drogheda Animal Rescue also looks after all the animal's veterinarian needs. So, there is no cost to you.
Considering Adopting, but not sure if you or your family are ready? Fostering is a great introduction to dog & cat ownership. It helps you get a very good idea of the involvement, committment, and work that is required to owning a pet. It also gives the family an opportunity to have a dog or cat as a member of the household. Some families are not sure if they are ready for a dog or a cat; by fostering, you can get all the rewards (and headaches) of pet ownership without the responsibility of actually owning the pet.
Injured & Elderly Animal Fostering Many times animals come into Drogheda Animal Rescue injured and ill. Sometimes due to a road accident; sometimes elderly dogs are deliberately abandoned by their owners or abandoned by family members because an elderly owner has passed away; sometimes due to severe neglect and deliberate cruelty. For these unfortunate animals, we desparately need foster homes to care for injured dogs & cats until they recover and ready for rehoming.
Sometimes a dog is too elderly to be rehomed so it remains permanently with Drogheda Animal Rescue. For these elderly dogs, they will receive treatment and medication to make their last days comfortable and we find them foster homes where they are treated with kindness, respect, and given a warm & safe place to live out their remaining days. If you can help out in these exceptional cases, please contact us. We will always be there for back-up & support.
Our Fostering Period is: Short-term (1 week) / Med-term (1-4 weeks) or Long-term (Until home is found).
If you can foster a dog or cat please contact us by e-mail on: info@dar.ie or cats@dar.ie By telephone 041 983 2418 (leave a message).

Sooty is a Labrador / Pointer Cross Breed. He was surrendered to DAR at the age of 9 months. Sooty had been kept in a back garden all day and night. He came to DAR with no training, lacking socialisation, and no understanding of the human world around him. Sooty has been with a variety of fosterers, learning something new along the way. With the help of these dedicated fosterers, Sooty has transformed from an unmanageable dog described as a "misguided teenager desparately seeking direction" into an obedient, clever, and much calmer dog.
Sooty has been rehomed in the U.K. to an active retired couple where he enjoys walks in the woods and mixing with the local dog walking crowd! Sooty has been one of our most challenging cases, but also the most rewarding.
