In Memory
Patch died on Thursday the 23rd of April 2009
This friendly male cat, affectionately known as Patch, died on Thursday 23rd of April 2009 at a Vet Surgery in Drogheda, after suffering an attack on Tuesday the 21st of April from two lurchers on Aston Village estate in Drogheda. The two lurchers, which are trained to hunt rabbits and hares, were allowed off their lead on the estate and chased Patch and mauled him so badly that he suffered severe internal injuries and died two days later. The owner stood by and recorded the incident on his moble phone before throwing an old Christmas tree over Patch and leaving him to die in the field. Luckily a local lady picked Patch up and got him to the vets.
Rest in Peace Patch
Raggedy Andy was put to sleep in April 2008
Drogheda Animal Rescue takes hundreds of cats & kittens into its care every year. Most of them are taken in as strays from a life of living rough on the streets, in derelict buildings, or simply unwanted neighbour cats. Raggedy Andy is one such cat that was brought into the care of DAR by a local couple. He was sick and starving, with missing teeth, and kidney problems. He was about 7 years old and was so sick, he couldn't even groom himself. He had trouble eating as he had a big ulcer on his tongue. But, DAR decided to give the little fellow one last chance.
Some progress was made with Raggedy Andy as he turned from being scared and timid cat to a friendly one, but still cautious of people. Unfortunately all the love and care given to him couldn't help Raggedy Andy and he had a relapse in mid-April 2008. He was rushed to the vet, where it was decided that it would be kinder to have Raggedy Andy put to sleep rather than to let him continue suffering.
There is no doubt that Raggedy Andy had a rough life. But, his life, character, and story touched the heart of one Drogheda Animal Rescue volunteer that she felt compelled to let his story be told and pay a special tribute to this unknown cat. We find comfort in knowing that Raggedy Andy is no longer in pain. May Raggedy Andy rest in peace.
Rocky was sadly put to sleep on March 31st, 2008
Rocky, a large elderly Pointer Cross Breed, was rescued by a kind and caring couple in Dundalk County Louth in November 2007 where he was found wandering the streets starving and cold. The couple brought Rocky back to health, but needed to move Rocky to new accommodation, as he was too large for their small garden & house. Rocky came into the care of Drogheda Animal Rescue on December 22nd, 2007. Rocky was described a gentle giant and everyone who met him were impressed by his gentle and obedient nature. He loved his walks and loved to be around people.
After coming into the care of Drogheda Animal Rescue, Rocky was fostered the Pryke family, who moved over recently from the U.S. and wanted to help out with our rescue as they were very familiar with helping dogs in need through previous involvement with abused & neglected dogs through rescue centres in U.S. Recently, Rocky had begun showing signs of weakness and loss of appetite. He was taken to the vet, where he was diagnoised with liver problems; suspected liver cancer and given no more than 3-months to live. Unfortunately, Rocky didn't last that long, and his condition worsened and health deteriorated. He no longer had the energy to get up and go for his much loved walks. Upon the advice of the vet, Rocky was sadly put to sleep on March 31st, 2008, as there was nothing that could be done to improve his health & condition.
Drogheda Animal Rescue wish to extend their gratitude to those people who helped foster Rocky during his stay with the rescue: Patricia Maguire, Erin Lawlor, and a very special thank you to the Pryke Family, who fostered Rocky for several months and cared for him until his last day. Rocky will always be remembered, as he was a very special dog that touched the hearts of those who were fortunate to meet him. May Rocky rest in peace.
Eddie the Terrier passed away on December 02nd, 2007
Eddie was a Mature, Male Terrier Cross-Breed. He was found at Oldbridge Concrete in Drogheda on November 6th, 2006. We felt that Eddie was deliberately abandoned due to his frail health. He was 10+ yrs old and was in very bad condition when found. Although Eddie could not hear or see very well, he enjoyed being around people. Due to Eddie's frail health, he remained under the care of Drogheda Animal Rescue and was not put up for adoption. Eddie was fortunate to have found a loving foster family that took him into their care. They treated him with patience & kindness and gave him the love & respect he never knew.
Eddie was a sensitive old soul and only Eddie knew of his past and how he came to be abandoned at Old Bridge Concrete last November, left standing in wet weather, hungry, exhausted, & shrivering from the cold and fear.
Thank you to those who have contributed to Eddie's heart medication. A very big and special thank you to the Holsgrove foster family who took excellent care of Eddie to his final moments. Their care and support for Eddie is greatly appreciated and extended above and beyond the responsibilities of a foster family. Eddie will be sadly missed and forever remembered by those who came to know him. May Eddie rest in peace.
