Swedish Rescue

Over the past years, many Drogheda Animal Rescue dogs have found wonderful new homes in Sweden through a very dedicated Rescue called Hundar Utan Hem, which translates into "Homeless Dogs". www.hundarutanhem.se . Drogheda Animal Rescue (DAR) has been very fortunate to establish a good relationship with Hundar Utan Hem and they have helped DAR cope with its increasing number of dogs coming into our rescue and rehome many DAR dogs that were difficult to rehome here in Ireland.

The Swedish Rescue has found excellent homes not only for DAR dogs, but also many dogs from Irish pounds. Hundreds of unwanted Irish dogs have been given a second chance at life through the Swedish Rescue. Originally, many dogs traveled by plane over to Sweden from Dublin airport free of charge as it was seen as a charitable cause, however, times have changed and now all dogs are sent over to Sweden as cargo and charged at cargo rates, by the kilogram. It costs €400 to €800 to send one dog over from Ireland to Sweden, and this cost is unrecoverable to the Swedish Rescue.

Many of the dogs that have been rehomed in Sweden include difficult breeds to rehome in Ireland, such as Lurchers, Greyhounds, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and Collies. As a result of the major increase in air freight costs, the number of unwanted Irish dogs rehomed in Sweden has declined: unfortunately, the number of unwanted dogs in Ireland has not.

We would very much like to help the Swedish Rescue recover some of their costs for air transport and we are appealing for your help so the unwanted & homeless DAR dogs can find a new life in Sweden.

Taz is a small terrier that was rehomed in Sweden about 3-years ago. When Taz first came to Drogheda Animal Rescue, he was a nervous wreck! Needless to say, his nervousness was caused by an equally nervous owner! Taz's prospects of rehoming in Ireland were looking pretty grim. Not everyone is up for a wired terrier! But since Taz went to Sweden, he has turned into a calm and relaxed dog. He even has found himself a job; serving as a companion and friend in a home for the elderly. Taz is shown above with his owner out for a winter day's walk in Sweden.

Help us to continue rehoming Ireland's unwanted dogs in Sweden and giving them a second chance at life.
